Where can an exhaust end?

Post by turoa »

Not strictly 4wd, but I recently aquired a WB holden one tonner. The exhaust on it had been modified by some retards and they had cut the muffler out and also left the exhaust sitting on the axle. It couldnt be hung back up because it would bind between the LPG tank and the shock

But I have chopped out the crappy part and remounted a muffler, but not put the exhaust out the side of the deck yet (infront of rear wheel). The question I had was are you allowed to just end the exhaust under the deck as I may change to a 2.5" exhaust later. It needs a warrent so I need to get it sorted in the next day or 2 and Id rather not waste half a donut if I dont have to.

I recently failed a cert for the exhaust not extending beyond the body of the vehicle, although your local WOF man might be a bit more lenient

I understand it the same as chopper but the rules now may have changed again since I looked into it, another thing is if the ute has a removeable tray (like a 4wd) it is measured from the end of the cabin as there is usualy a vent in a back corner and it has to clear the body if you have it ending in front of the rear wheel (not sure what clear the body is defined as).

In the rules they prefer it to have it end after the rear tyre (there are less rules to check if you do that), best bet would be to go to a exhaust place and see what they say they can do (then go home and do it that way) they will be more up to date than my info.

Good luck.

Should be no problem out the side. I have Morris minor ute and factory placement was just in front of the rear tyre. I think if it is behind openings into the passenger space you are ok.

No questions asked with this set up when I went for revinning at a testing station

Took my Jeep to pitstop today with the intent of cutting a fair bit of the exhaust off. Its going to end up popping out the drivers side, just between the line of the rear of the door and the tyre.... 150mm is the dimension that was mentioned to me also.

as far as my understanding went, as long as it exited behind the last seats in the vehicle.

my exhaust is done atleast. it now exits infront of the rear wheel under the chassis. that exhaust is a work of art (as far as rusty old pieces of tin horily welded together goes)

had a quick look at the WOF book at work today under exhaust stuff.

there is only a couple of paragraphs and it basically says nothing.

it just mentions that the exhaust should be made in such a way that the operation of it cannot be tampered with in any way.

it makes no mention of where it should exit if it should exit at all and theres no measurements written in there anywhere

so now that you have made one, its just a matter of wait and see at warrant time.

if a 2dr or ute type vehicle exhaust can come out the side rearward of the midway point of the wheel base aslong as it is not where it could burn your leg getting in /out, i have built lots of exhausts like this that have been vinned and certed on various cars.it is the manz rules and they have to be road legal.did a 62 buick coupe with side exit exhaust running a 402 nail head v8 and vtnz complied the car without even a comment on it .
