Disengaging 4X4
Disengaging 4X4
barring a couple of times have had great difficulty shifting back to 2WD in my 1997 Pajero 3.5L. I assume it doesn't take too much finnesing as a local dealer managed to slam it in! But agreed to take a closer look if it continued. Idea's appreciated. Still pretty green on the 4WD scene!
just my 2c worth...
I've got exactly the same truck..and had the same problem when i bot it initially....i assumed it might be that it wasn't frequently used before thus the problem...i always stopped the paj and put it in neutral and tried it that way and it always worked....but now it works just fine....

not had exact expeience with that model, but in general if the tyre sizes or( even just how much difference is in the wear front to rear) causes wind up in transfer box.
try shifting out of 4wd before on the seal and maybe turn slightly one way then the other while moving slowly and slip it thru when the tension is relieved.
on hiluxes i often get the passenger to slip it thru when i go from 1st to 2nd . no point trying too hard and buggering something.

My previous 93 has similar problem, this one had difficulty to put engage centre lock. After several use (even of lose gravel back load on slow speed) eventually cure the problem.
Most Japanese import Pajero is not used in 4WD mode (back and forth) except few for winter ski fields.... (I guess).

Yeah, My 94 Pajero used to do that when i first got it.
I have found that it doesnt matter what seal you are on, just put it in neutral, change to the gearing you want:
2WD
4WD high
4WD LOW
4WD Diff Lock
Then put it in reverse and let the gears drive the car back not using the gas, or if on soft ground just a little gas just to move the tyres only a half rotation and you should be sweet, however if this doesnt do it, i would be inclinded to get it checked out just to be on the safe side, would hate for the damn thig to break just as you are pulling of a 10G up hill over cresent with your balls in your throat move. That would suck the kumura!
