A 2LT is a 2.4 Turbo
I have one and I love it, have had no problems with it. one of my mates has one and has lots of problems but still likes it.
I think they are a great truck

yea make sure when you change your starter motor that you put a washer on the positive connection, cause if it comes off it will stuff your alternator to the point of beyond repair!!! (Ok another lesson learnt lol)

yep... Barring the technical words that i dont know. On saturday night my power cable (+) came unattatched to my stater motor, which is normally controled by a solanoid. So it just started arcing out and made the trucks electrics go A-Wall.
Sunday night the starter motor failed on me and upon having it checked on Tuesday for damage, it wasnt water damage but a large power surge or spike that was sent thru it that burnt out the regulator and stuffed alot of the wiring internally on it.

There also seemed to be no second hand ones available in chch so i purchased a new one, better than spending 380 on parts for mine plus time and any extras. So any one with a 89-91 surf becarefull casue they arent that easy to get hold of.

If the power cable came off the ALTERNATOR I could see that happening, but not the starter motor... The starter only has power through it when you are startingthe truck... The regulator is external, but part of the alternator circuit.

I've got a couple of regulators here...

regulator!

Post by Benzev »

On the LN130 model Surfs the alternator has an integrated IC regulator! Only the older models had the external regulators! Your not having much luck are you Andrew?! If you fried the regulator only which is most likely than you could have got one through Canterbury Auto Electrical on St Asaph St for $120 or less depending on what brand (aftermarket)you get!
A brandnew alternator must have cost a packet!

Yea i looked round for alternators, and because the 90 ln130s have internal regulators and the oil vacum pump on the rear, (others have them between the pull wheels and the engine as such) they are very hard to get hold of. Only place that had one in chch was lineside, and they werent moving on 395+ with exchange, appartently fully reconditioned, i asked if the bearings had been done and they said they had been checked but not replaced so big fart to the reconditioned part of that i decided that i was best to spend 595 and get one brand new, that day, with a warrrenty and put it on that night.

Ive still got my old one for parts and i will probably go back to where i know one is for under 100 with a damaged shaft and swap the bits for a spare.

Steve, The cable that came off the top of the starter motor was definitly a constant otherwise it wouldnt have arced out, it was the positive that is secured to the top of the starter motor.

Wierd... oh well... maybe next time you should ask me before shelling out big coin for stuff like that... I have a freindly local electrosparky thats not too expensive and can replace the rectifier, and not sure about those ones but some of the internal reg ones are just a replacable block that you can buy cheap from places like Repco.

You'd better SAS your truck before you go spending any more money on useless stuff like that again  On the bright side it will keep everything up out of harms way, and if you do have to fix it then you can just walk straight underneath, reach up and work on it :)

just as an aside... small world... The guy I bought my bighorn off was the one you sold your other surf to... he saw the light (whaich makes me wonder what I'm doing with so many Isuzus now  )
