A class questions.

Post by Heath »

Okay I borrowed a copy of the rules (2007) while I wait for mine to arrive and have a couple of questions.

This will be an A class wagon.

Section L Body,
"Wheel cavity interpereted as inner guard, outer guard, inner front panel and firewall may be cut, enlarged, flared, re-enforced or raised to the lower edge of the origional bonnet height for tyre clearance only provided no sharp outer edges are left which could cause injury."

 I read that to mean I can cut , bend, bash huge amounts of panel steel etc as long as I can justify it under making space for wheels and tyres. It says cut but not cut out. Does that mean if I cut something it must remain attached or must be reattached somewhere? Does the same apply for the rear wheel well?

Section O Brakes,
"production modified vehicles may fit brake boosters, tandem master cylinders, and or disk brakes to the origional brake system.

 So I can fit disk rears in the place of the drums and replace the master cylinder accordingly?

Section Q Shock absorbers,
"production modified vehicles may fit heavy duty shock absorbers provided they are fitted to the origional mounts, and equal the number of shock absorbers that were factory fitted."

 So I can fit after market shocks of different lengths to original shocks as long as I use the original mounting points? Like OME struts and rear shocks?

Section R springs,
"production modified vehicles may fit shackle stops, and over set sprinmgs may be used, provided they conform to the original design."

 So can I run LWB springs in a SWB or do I have to get the old original ones stretched? By over set does that mean original springs reset longer or an after market spring that is over set when comapred to the origional?

Section U Fittings and accessories,
"The following may be removed:... wiper arms,... all asociated wiring and window wiper mechanisms."

 Does this mean I can remove the wiper system complete? Incl wiper motor, arms and mechanism? Is the motor considered part of the mechanism?

Others I cant find.

Can I relocate the battery? Cant find a section to cover it.
Any wiring not required can it be removed? Cant find a section to cover this either.
Can I use a boat tank for a fuel tank?

Do I need bumpers, side rails etc or is that up to the individual?

with the guards im 99% sure that what you remove must stay there, like if you cut out a whole lot you could bolt what you cut out under the wheel arch or what ever, but dont quote me on that yet

breaks, im 99% sure you can change them to disk

shocks and springs can be changed as long as the mounts are not modified, so you could put a 20" spring lift and 50" longer shocks and it would matter as long as they fit the original mounts but in a trials truck i dont think you would want a suspension lift really

wiper motors and stuff may be left on but if leave the water bottle and water pump bit on so you can squirt the martials when they give you a bad score

Any auckland based scrutineers?

I just want to get to the bottom of a few questions before I cut anything (or spend any folding stuff).

My only concern is will scrutineers all be singing off the same song sheet or do they all have differing ideas as to how to interperet the rules? Having dealt with a few large organisations there can sometimes be a little variation in interperetations (Got a W of F lately?). Maybe they have ironed out all the issues I am worried about and I can just get into it but I dont want to arrive at an event only to be disqualified because of non standard modifications.

As i understand it you may not remove any material from the guards as they are not allowed to be lighter than the factory items. Cut and fold or reweld is the way i would go.

Yes you can fit discs, sorry not sure about the master cylinder.

Yes you can put longer shocks in but your springs must remain the same and must use all factory mounting points. You can have the streched coils or compressed.

I think the "all associated" part answers you wiper question.

Yes you can relocated the battery and can run a different tank.

i am not a scrutineer but have looked at many trucks of different classes and have spoken to scruitneers about a few of therse rules. Id just build it to within how you understand the rules. If you get pulled up for any of these things argue the point and if teh scrutineer doesnt see it your way you are still allowed to compete you just have to have it rectified for the next round.

Sweet. I was most worried about turning up and being told to go away. But if common sence prevails cool.

I had intended to cut and fold the guards so the excess material will still be there. If I cut it out then I will rivet it back into the engine bay cloase to its origional position anyway.

Springs are a bit of a pain. I dont want super high springs but a little more than the flatties I have would be good. May just find a newish SWB set and get them stretched a little. More worried about the struts and shocks, but I believe they are cool as long as the normal mounts are used (which they will be).

I figured the disks were a neccessity (drums are crap when full of crap as we all know and wear really quickly) and I have the plates already machined and a set of old disks so I just need the calipers and mounts (Just - Yeah right, sounds like it is almost a bolt in swap, which I can assume it isnt). Maybe later I will chase a MC for the brakes but for now the oldie will do.

Cheers,

Heath

Reply from Scrutineers to my questions

Hi Heath
sorry about the delay but needed answers from all scrutineers

Answers as follows

1/ guard cutting can only be done for tyre clearance

2/ brakes, you can fit discs to the rear and change master

3/ shocks and spring can be replaced with longer aftermarket
only coil over if that is what the vehicle had fitted originally

4/ fitting and accessories, wiper system can be completely removed

5/ battery and fuel tank can be moved and wiring not used

6/ bumpers can be removed, lightened or replaced with after market
as long as it is to WOF standards

hope this has answered your questions

cheers
