Which arb locker for 80 series (RD124 or RD33)
Which arb locker for 80 series (RD124 or RD33)
I am about to order an ARB locker for my 80 series cruiser. I believe there are two that it could be. Either the RD124 or the RD33. One is for a full floating axle and the other is for a semi floating axle. Any clues as to what the 80 series has or did they come out with both. Also what is the difference between full floating and semi floating. I don't want to order all the parts from R&P and find out its wrong.

I've got RD33's in my 9" 70 series full floating diffs
Full floating axles fix to the hub by a round flange on the end of the axle with about 8 bolts. you can see the axle bolted to the hub when you look at it. You can unbolt and extract the axles with the vehicle still on its wheels.
Semi-floating axles are fixed with C clips inside the diff, you've got to take the inspection plate off the rear of the diff houseing, take the cross pin out and you can then remove the clips to extract the axles, you've got to support the vehicle and remove the wheel(s) as the flange the wheel is bolted to comes out with the axle

some of the 80 series did have a semi floater in the back.but on the whole 95% are full floater .real low spec (ie no flares etc )had the semis.

easy way to spot the difference is semi axles
sit flush with the wheel centre and floaters stick out about 80mm

Thanks for all the replies. Its for the rear of a 1990 80 series VXR landcruiser. I'll have a look to determine which axle type it is. I'm assuming that it will be the RD33 that I need but needed to confirm before importing everything from the states. I'm doing the crown wheel & pinions (4.88:1 )in the front and rear at the same time.

pop the bonnet and get the axle code off the ID tag and post it and we will tellyou what it is, coz a whole bunch of folks on here have all the codes, so it will be a race to see who gets it first

Re: Which arb locker for 80 series (RD124 or RD33)
I suspect that the diffs have already been changed as there is plugs for ABS but my cruiser never had ABS. It used to have the original electric diff locks as the switch is still on the dash but it now has an LSD in the back so I suspect the axle codes will be incorrect. There is a flange on the end of the axle in the centre of the wheel that has six small bolts so by the sounds of the replies I would conclude that I have a full floater.
