FJ70 1986 Landcruiser Distributor Rotor
FJ70 1986 Landcruiser Distributor Rotor
I am in need of a distributor rotor or atleast the parts number for one to fit my landcruiser. It is an 1986 FJ70.
The problem that I have had so far trying to get this part is that FJ70's seem to have two different types of distributor setup. One setup which is just your usual type distributor system and one which has an octane selector on it. The rotors for each of these distributors is different. I am in need of the rotor that will fit the distributor that does have an octane selector.
So far all the help I have had has been in aquiring multitudes of the wrong rotor.
Cheers for any help.

Re: FJ70 1986 Landcruiser Distributor Rotor
The only thing I ever found when I had my 3F was there were 2 different distributors listed, one had a larger diameter cap and the other was the smaller on the same as 2F 40 series cruisers. Mine had the smaller one.
I dont think thats going to help you at all but thats all I ever knew about them?
Edit*
Is the octane adjuster your talking about the adjustment for the timing?

Re: FJ70 1986 Landcruiser Distributor Rotor
Yeah I think that might be how the octane selector works. Its located off the side of the dizzy. It adjusts the timing just a little bit so that you can get the best performance with fine adjustments or something.
There are two different dizzy caps(/dizzy sizes?). I beleive that mine is the smaller one because the rotors that I keep getting given are too big for the cap I have. These rotors also dont fit the dizzy rotor keyway because they have a different connection type.
If anyone has one of the workshop manuals for these cruisers they will see a diagram of the dizzy with the octane selector aswell as a diagram of the standard dizzy. If you look closely at the diagram you can see how the different rotors fit onto the keyways.
What parts number is the dizzy rotor that you mention? From what I can fathom the 2F rotor may be the one I am after.
Cheers,

Try asking for a 40 series one, thats probably the type you've got

Re: FJ70 1986 Landcruiser Distributor Rotor
Yeah,
I took a step in that direction today. Fingers crossed its right. Vehicle been "off" the road for a while now. If it all works out Ill let ya know.
Thanks for the help.

get the vehicle number and chassis number off the vin plate and go to a toyota dealer. they should be able to source the right part.
Re: FJ70 1986 Landcruiser Distributor Rotor
Got the right dizzy rotor. It was the same as the older FJ40 ones. Didn't help my truck go but atleast I can now cross that possibility off the list.
Looks like my engine problems might be due to the coil. Took some readings off the coil and it is only getting 8volts of juice from the battery which may lead to the reason why the spark plugs are unable to spark. Going to do some research and see where that gets me.

That sounds about right, usualy the feed from the ign switch runs through a resister to drop the voltage, when you flick the key to start it feeds the full 12v to the coil to allow for the voltage drop that occurs with the starter drawing so much current.
Have you checked your points, do they arc when you turn the engine over?
Re: FJ70 1986 Landcruiser Distributor Rotor
My mate and me had a look at the dizzy and we both came to the conclusion that there is no action with the points at all.
We reset the gap on the rubbing block because it was continuously hard up against the cam but that didnt change anything. We also took some Ohm readings from the coil and from memory one or two of the readings were a little bit outside of the limits recommended by the Cruiser manual.
Wondering if it might be worthwhile forking out some dosh and getting a new coil and perhaps even an electronic ignition system or something to try and solve the problem. Might be money not well spent if the underlying cause is deeper.

if you cant get any spark at the points it sounds like you might have a coil or condensor problem.
Changeing the rotor wont do much if the points arent energised?

Re: FJ70 1986 Landcruiser Distributor Rotor
I needed the new rotor because the old one shattered into a million pieces for some unknown reason. Now that Ive replaced it Ive moved on to the next few options such as checking the coil and points.
What will be the best way to distinguish wether I have a coil problem and or a condensor problem?

Oh.... I see

I dunno how to test a condensor, I had one fail once and the wire broke inside the plastic sheathing, took me a couple of hours to find out what I couldnt get any spark.
You want to try and not randomly buy replacement parts if you can, have you got a mate with a cruiser that you can swap a few bits over (coil etc) to isolate whats crook on your truck before you start buying stuff?
Re: FJ70 1986 Landcruiser Distributor Rotor
Nope I don't. My mates that have cruisers have all got diesels so I get the flack for being a gas guzzler as it is, let alone a broken down one
On the upside my truck did come installed with an LPG system so things aint all bad. Me and my mate will have a think of how I might be able to test the condensor. Got a day off on tuesday so it looks like that will be the next tinkering day.

Re: FJ70 1986 Landcruiser Distributor Rotor
So an update,
Got up on tuesday morning. After a little thinking I went back to basics and checked/cleaned things up as much as I saw fit. Managed to get a spark at the points and from the coil. Hopped in my truck... pulled choke out a little... turned key ... aaaaaaaaand the truck had life. Unfortunately after driving it around and turning it off and on a couple of times the starter motor has completely given up the ghost and now that needs fixing/replacing. Push starting the beast everywhere is not the most fun thing to be doing every time I want to drive it
.
So next step... Starter motor
.
Over and out,
Kempy.
