Post by 63swb »

Has anyone rebuilt the universal on the rear driveshaft of a GQ safari? if so is any special equipment needed and is there a kit available?

Hey
Part of my business is driveline manufacturing and rebuilding,,,,all you need to do is get hold of a universal joint from your local repco or bnt;if you cant pm me
Remove clips from original uni joint all 4 clips that is hammer and flat nose screwdriver should do,,use a small centre punch and mark your flange and yoke with a couple of dots so that when you fit the joint they go in the same palce and doesnt upset the fatory balance too much,,
open a vice so the flange sits nicely on the vice and with a copper hammer or hammer with soft drift strike the area on one side of just below the cup so the uni cup pops out ,,,sometimes it takes a couple of decent hits!!,,,do the same for the rest.
once all cups are out clean the flange eyes out with breakclean etc and then the clip faces on the yoke and flange gice a very light rub over with a file "light" is the word here you only want to take any high spots off from taking the joint out.
To fit the new u/joint open vice put cup up aginst vice and carfully press cup half way in as square a poss into the eye,,,once half in fit the cross...making sure grease nipple is in correct place and fit other cup and now press both in making sure they are both sitting square,,use small socket to push cup through enough to fit first clip in making sure it seats properly then do the same for the other side ensuring clip locates in cup groove properly,,,this is important!!!!,, once all happy and fitted if joint a bit stiff give a light tap with soft hammer on all 4 areas below cup on yokes and will free up .remember to put flange back on the way it came off lining the dots up
hope this helps :)
