I reconded mine in the MU a couple of years ago,no hassle,i put in steel liners in place of the chrome ones,not to bad for cost on parts.. the 2.8 had the problem of the emission going back into the motor causing premature wear shouldn't say this but disconnect it and put a plate over where it comes out and disconnect everything problem solved

what did that sorta cost? i thought it might just be cheaper to just get a working secound hand one.

Yep, most Isuzu diesels have replaceable chrome liners. Make sure if you recondition it you don't use chrome rings. I did once (used the rings which came with the new pistons) and they chewed out in 27,000km.
Use genuine parts if you can get them.

I have a bigger Isuzu (the 4BD1T) and used to get my parts from Isuzu truck dealers. But the Isuzu industrial engine suppliers seem to have a bigger range for the older engines. Cable Price etc.
I have also bought parts from Segedins, bnt and repco, but the Segedins gasket set (which appears to be the one that BNT sell) was complete crap.
Make sure you get a genuine head gasket (laminated steel) and genuine rings. Aftermarket pistons, liners and bearing shells seem to do the job well.

I would get rid of the chrome bore and go for steel liners...... the best place i know to get parts is at ALL PARTS INTERNANIAL ..100 Vanguard Street Nelson..they will sell the parts half the cost of anywhere else..just ask for Jim ..their phone number is .. 03 548 0922..they are also incredible for oil filters etc as well i only pay $17 for the cruiser instead of about $35 for the same one anywhere else, ..I think the parts at the time cost me $1500 but then you have to get bored etc ...they really would be worth talking to

My engine was converted to cast-iron liners at one stage. I had them bored back out to fit the original chrome liners in.
The japanese knew what they were doing.
Segedins list $97 for each chromard cylinder liner, $165 for a set of pistons.
$27 for a cast iron liner which needs machining to fit and then to finish.
If you can do the labour yourself then Isuzu's are cheap engines to rebuild.

It just seems to be a matter of opinion on the liner...all the MU'S here went to the the steal liners,there was a reason but i can't remember what it was ...mine is still going strong [ i think as i sold it ]..But do ring ALL PARTS....No don't work for them,but they do sell at cost and give good advice

You might also consider a second hand 4JB1T if you can pick up a good one - they seem to sell for round $1000-1200.
Is there not a problem fitting liners and rings of the same material - some reaction which occurs and causes them to wear out v quickly. Seem to have heard this before but can't remember details. Important to check.

Yes, that's why you need to use the factory rings with chrome liners.
On my 4BD1T my fuel economy jumped from 8.7km/l average to 10km/l average when I changed from the cast liners with aftermarket rings to the chrome liners and Isuzu rings. The difference in friction when installing the pistons was huge and this was killing my fuel economy.

That's interesting ... My Auto-machinist friend said that they had lots of problems with the chrome liners and recomended cast ones when I had mine redone.
There is no mechanical problem so difficult that it cannot be solved by brute strength and ignorance.

Same here,thats why i put the cast ones in mine a few years back,the guy that done mine did about 3 others as well, it was recommended when i bought the parts to use cast as the chrome ones gave trouble

If you use the wrong rings (which appear to be the rings every parts supplier in NZ wants to sell you) then you'll have trouble with the liners and rings chewing into each other.
But this isn't the liners fault, it's bad parts selection.
I tend to trust Isuzu over local engine rebuilders on this one, my hard earned lessons showed me why. WIth cast-iron liners and chrome rings the economy dropped 15% and it started smoking.
I went back to chrome liners, but used the aftermarket rings that came with the piston kit, they chewed apart in 27,000km. I still have the pistons, rings and liners here if anyone would like to see the results.
I then went to chrome liners and genuine rings. Economy picked up, smoke disappeared and I'm a very happy camper.

The liners that were put in come with there own rings,the supplier i deal with will sell what ever you want.
When i bought my MU many years ago i was advised that the motors were crapping out at abut 160000 they were right, [ with hard use though ] after reconned no more hassle what so ever
