Galv or Zink or Powdercoat or a Combination or....?

Post by Summit033 »

I have recently had made a mounting bracket for the UHF aerial and reversing spots/work lights behind the spare wheel carrier, and am just wondering whether to get it Galvanized then Powdercoated,or Zinc plated then powdercoated, or just powder coated....? Could fill up the tubes with some form of coating then tip it back into the tin, then just powdercoat the outside I guess.....

Image

Spoke to the powdercoater and he can go over Galvanizing no problem, but he said it doesn't adhere to the galv as well as raw steel, and will potentially chip if hit hard. Not so much a problem for this bracket, but the next mission will be rock sliders and rear bars, so will be more important then.

Not really a huge cost either way with this small bracket, but just wanted to do it right and wondered what the 'correct' method would be.

Any suggestions...?

Thanks :)

mayby its just the photo....it looks like its made from stainless ??

easiest is proberly just spray on galv, otherwise hot dip galv. painting and especialy powder coating tend to rust under the coating.

I've had lots of things powder coated :D . For the best powder coating protection they normally zinc coat after they sand blast it. Then powder coat it. This way. If it chips it won't rust as fast.

Not Stainless, just mild steel - Roll cage tube and a bit of square box......

Actually, hot dip galvanising can be powder coated without much problem if the quelching is not performed as the last step of galvanising. The oils used for quelching will make the paint not stick properly. The only trick is to paint it as quickly as possible or you can damage the surface.

I have had my gas tank skid (made of steel) galvanised and then powder coated about 3 or 4 months ago. Its was a simple process (and double rust protection).

dont use the spray can zinc you can scrape it off with your finger nail.

galvanising only costs a few $ per kilo (maybe more for small items like that)

I think I paid around $ 2 / kilo (with a minimum charge around $20 or something).
