Gonna re-use the old header flanges to join the rest of the exhaust to whats there already

Chopped the old bits off, chucked them in the late and bored them to 2.5"

Dude, I wish I had a 10th of the skill you have.

There is something addictive about watching a build with this attention to detail and quality.

Oh and when you are finished I have a vitara you can 'play with' next if you like. For free of course. I wouldnt dream of charging you to 'play' with it. That would be rude of me.

Gutted - obviously anything in there is bad, but what actually is it?

Easier to get another motor perhaps?

Well I plucked one head off tonite, and it dont look good, rusty pitted areas in the bore  I'm picking the other bank is the same...

Image

Image

So I have a couple of options...
1 - buy another 1UZ of trademe, bout $1000, + another $5-600 for timing belt, bearings, seals, plugs, starter recon blah blah
2 - fix the one I've got
3 - Put something else in

On one hand, a new 1uz is expensive and possibly have issues as well, I'd still need to sort out a rear sump...lots of work,
on the other hand, exhaust is done, engine mounts done, just needs putting in and a bit of a "do up"

Fixing the one I have will cost more, will take much longer, but I will know exactly what I have and it should be sweet for ages

Putting something else in....hmmmmm, but what? ....wait a minute!, what have I got stored away in the corner for a rainy day!?....................................

A 3RZ-FE! of course!, 2.7l twin cam 4 banger out of a 2003 2wd Hilux done 40k!
Sump is already right, already has a clutch, bellhousing etc to suit my spare Surf gearbox, all bolted up to my dual transfers puts the engine mounts in a nice spot to use the existing Lexus mounts, fark all wiring to do!
I think its what I'll do for Rockrash 09, then recon or replace the 1UZ at my leisure next year, maybe I'll leave the 3RZ in and put the V8 in the zook!!

have been watching this for a while, bloody top job with the work you have done, wish i was that good and had the tools

sounds like a plan with engines, bit of a real shame with the 1uz.
33" muddies, 50mm body lift, ball joint flip, quick release front sway bar,40mm lifted rear dobi springs and new shocks, custom sill body armor, custom front bar.

Hi Jafa, just another small hic--up, depending on the water/ corrosion damage I would recommend a freshen up of the V8, new rings and bearings, a light hone to clean up the bores, a good three angle valve and head job and get those exhaust gases heading down those sweet looking pipes------- "music to my ears". I bet there is a engine re conditioner in your area that could swap you, with your talents  . If you have to use the 2.7 4 banger, there is one fitted to a HiLux here in CHCH and it is very impressive, heaps of torque and really makes good power to weight ratio.

YOUR THE MAESTRO, CONDUCT IT ANYWAY, THE MUSIC WILL SOUND SWEET,

FITZY.

That's gutting dude. :(

But it may not be too bad, and it is worth doing as Smokey suggested, bearings etc, $100-200. rings about the same, gasket set ? use the rest of the shit you already have. Then a weekend shagging about with it. You can dooooeettttt

I hear what your sayin, I lifted the other head and there is bad pitting, to much to hone out, itll need boring, which means new pistons, rings etc. The heads will need rebuilding as well, some of the valves are seized in the guides
There was some funny crystalline stuff built up around some of the valves, in such quantities that you couldn't see the back of the valve
I think its had a lungful of water through the intake, maybe from a hose or water blaster at the junkyard or something, I dunno
So really this motor is pretty much junk, I might have a line on a "parts" motor locally from a stockcar dude, but I'm not holding my breath.
I will put the 3RZ in for our RR09 at Xmas, rebuild or replace the V8 in the new year, then slot that in place of the 3RZ. That will ease my workload plenty, hopefully give me a chance at a shakedown run before the big trip. I still have so much to do without worrying about extra work on the motor.
But don't worry, the V8 will go in, just a little later than planned :D

Ok, got a bit done after getting over the V8 dramas
The 3RZ is in, bolted up to a 5 speed, and dual transfers, its sits a little further back than normal because the drive train is a bit shorter than the Lexus setup. No biggie tho, maybe a little firewall massage needed

Engine mounts, managed to use the Lexus ones with a little hole slotting :D

Started on the panhard setup, using these high tensile cardboard brackets

I like the fact you are using renewable resoursces in your wagon. The recycled cardboard and the wood will keep the greenies happy with you. Not sure if the WoF man will be though.

Looking good though.
