Hi chopper
doesn't look normal. You have too many gearlevers.

Just joking

so there was only two of the ten mounts didnt line up?

We had to cut off the mounts in front of the rear wheel either side and move them about 50mm or so.Can't recall if we had to alter the shape of them, if we did, it wasn't by much. We fitted the mounts to the body and then welded them to the chassis to make sure they were in the right place.

[quote="Chopper01"]well managed to take firday off work this week because of the rain so managed to put the new fly wheel and clutch onto the 2jz. we also managed to get it all boulted together and get the motor and box in the hole in one go thanks to cool tool number 6 . we spent some time shaging arround thinking about the engine mounts and how to make the up which we mucked arround for a coupple of hours got it looking good then found the fork lift hav lost some pressure and the motor had droped      . so I returned today and got it all set up and made some new mounts and got a few little jobs out of the way . here go some pics

Hi chopper
Project looks good and excellent wheel travel. Coming together nicely
Just curious, why didn't you use a high pinion diff ?

I used one for 3 reasons.
They are quite a bit stronger
front drive shaft in a better line
Pinion up out of shit more

Thats a fair enough answer. What diff ratio are you running because if I happen to hear of one going cheap, I will let you know.

running 4.5 at the moment as the 5m was strugling to turn the 37's but will probley go back to 4.3 ratio with the 2jz as they are a stronger diff

Need to qualify that - only stronger going forward; calculated 30% weaker in reverse:
http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/4R_TechInfo ... seCutGears
"The High Pinion diff uses reverse cut gears and is best suited for front solid axle applications. While it shares internals with the V6 diff, the gears are unique to the High Pinion due to the reverse cut, which puts the gears on the drive side of the teeth in the front axle. High pinion diffs are commonly found in 1990-1997 FJ-80 and FJZ-80 model Landcruisers that had the solid front axles. Ironically, the high pinion diff was not designed for the added ground clearance, but rather so that the steering tie rod on the FJ-80 could be run *below* the front driveshaft to keep the vehicle low!

Reverse Cut vs. Standard Cut
Perhaps the single most misunderstood axle term is reverse cut, often mistakenly referred to as reverse rotation. A reverse cut housing is not standard cut housing turned upside down, it is a specially designed housing, most notably with internal mechanisms to aide in pumping gear oil up to the high-mounted pinion gear and bearings for proper lubrication. The term "reverse cut" refers to the direction of the spiral cut in the ring gear, which is opposite that of a standard cut ring gear. Contrary to popular belief, it does not run backwards or in reverse. The principle behind a reverse cut is to strengthen the operation of the gear when it is used for a front driving axle application. See below for an illustration of the ring gear tooth nomenclature and construction. As you can see, the drive side of the gear tooth is nearly perpendicular to the direction that the pinion gear tooth pushes on it, making for an efficient transfer of force. The coast side on the other had, is angled away from the direction of force, this causes the pinion gear to want to "ride up" on the ring gear teeth under load, lessening the area of contact and moving it out towards the thinner ends of the teeth vs. the thicker root of the tooth. As such, it is generally the case that a ring/pinion gear set is 30% weaker when run in the reverse direction. This is not normally a problem, as you rarely see the kinds of loads in reverse that you see when going forward. Likewise, a front axle usually has less load on it that a rear axle, like when climbing up some steep obstacle (i.e. less weight and traction up front) so its common to run a rear differential in a front axle. The 4- and 6-cyl gears will run on the coast side in the front axle, likewise, a high-pinion, reverse-cut differential will run on the coast side in a rear axle application. While the 30% strength reduction sounds like a major design problem, it should really be looked at from the standpoint of an perfectly symmetrical gear tooth. In this case, using the non-symmetrical tooth geometry gives a gear that is 15% stronger in the forward direction and 15% weaker in the reverse direction. While 15% one way or the other doesn't sound like a lot, its enough to make an 8" ring gear, properly cut, as strong as a 9.25" ring gear with symmetrical teeth. However, looking at it the other way of using a reverse cut gear in a rear axle, the 30% strength reduction makes an 8" ring gear only as strong as a 6" gear with normal cut teeth. One way to reduce the load on the gear is to reduce the weight of the vehicle its driving. For example, if the normal cut gear was designed for a 4000 lb. vehicle, reducing the vehicle's weight to under 3000 lbs. will reduce the load on the reverse cut gear in a rear axle to the point it may be strong enough to handle the load."

Chops knows my cunning plans . And, still very much lusting after Ricks Jeep design 8) ... but that will be my personal toy and is on the back burner until completion of a new 'family friendly' club truck (only in the design stage, and won't see the light of day until probably middle/late next year) to carry the clan in the comfort they are demanding (after the Easter trip I developed a new mathmatical formula:

I got the new doner motor last night and we managed to pull out the motor and box and strip down the auto to the bare nuts to replace the main shaft for my cool new adaptor to mate the v6 commy to the hilux transfers. It dident go to bad but I dont want to do it again   it is amazing the shit they pack into those farken things I took a heap of photos on a stage by stage so will post up a new thread on how to strip a commy auto.

all things going well I can get the motor sitting in the hole tomorrow and get mike arround on monday night to wire it up

Re: CTR's new toy

Post by Chopper01 »

well the time has come to fit the adapter to the auto and I thought I would give it a crack

here is the adaptor
Image
Image

here is the doner motor
Image

this is the motor out of the hole miuns the auto
Image

here is the auto on the work bench note how long the main shaft is "the shaft out the back of the auto " this is what we need to replace to fit the new adapter
Image

This is where we gain axcess to the auto to pull the guts out of it
Image

Taken out the 7 boults holding in the plate. now you cant just pull the plate out now as it's about 30mm thick and you need to take the pan off
Image

Right now you need to pull the coil pack at the front of the auto and un plug the wiring , you then need to remove the oil line at the top of the auto
Image

With a bit of jiggling we managed to pull the front of the auto apart
Image

Now you need to remove all the 10mm boults on the valve cap and the 13mm boult on the auto selecter not dont panic cause there will be three ball berrings fall out make sure they go backon top of the gasket when you put it together, you also need to remove the two valves on the back of the auto this will allow you to remove the main gasket"be carefull not to damage it"
Image

Here is it without the main gasket now there is four ballberrings in here as well 3 small ones and 1 big one. make sure they go back in the same place
Image

You now need to pull the clutch band off and grab the shaft and wriggle it and the two sets of clutch plates will pull out now these are all cliped together so they wont fall apart
Image

Here is what it the auto looks like with the part out of it
Image

This is what the inside of the clutch pack looks like now not the red washer in the center this will need to be replaced but we will talk about that later
Image

now grab this unit and it will pull out in two bits
Image

here is what we have down the guts of the auto now
Image

now pull out the main berring and clutch plate with retaining clip
Image

Now you remove the circlip on the main shaft and remove it from the back
Image

This is the pump unit
Image

now you slide in the new main shaft and re clip in the retainer circlip
Image

Now start putting it back together in the reverce oder. here is the bucket and gear set going back in
Image

Then we need to replace the red rubber washer with the hard plastic one now you need to remove two huge circlips and remove one clutch pack then carefully remove the top plate off the second clutch pack
Image[*]

You then put the main top plate on and put in the other clutch plates you must make sure the spring clips go back in as well
Image

Then you fit back in the main drum and all other bits in the oder you pulled them out in . be carefull to take care and not force it in and you will end up with a finshed auto like this
Image

If there are any other questions on any problems just get ahold of me and I'll help out where I can

Well done chopper it looks similar to plumbing. You might have a few more to do now that you are an expert automatic transmission specialist.

It looks beyond me. Next time Im in Christchurch visiting my daughter I'm going to call around to have a proper look.
