blown front diff...
blown front diff...
am pritty sure i blew my front diff last night at the waimak went up a big hill bit of a bang, grinding noises and alot of cursing... put in 2wd and drove home with no noises (has ADD, not sure how this affects it, where does it dissengage ect) jacked up today and will be fully open, one wheel spinning and other not,, then will lock and both spin then spin as should - one in each direction - and then back to start, my thoughts f*&%ed, do i sound right???
what are my options??? if replacing will all surf difs fit? or are old ones different, and when i replace is there anyway of strengthening it - broke with 31's so new 33's wont help.
and yes i would love to put a solid dif in the front but unles it can be done for a grand..... then im shit out of luck
cheers Pete

The 7.5 diffs are weak. I just went through the same drama as you. What I did is get a diff from a wrecker(450+gst) but i was in a hurry. hunt around people have these(and throw them away GRRRrrrr) on trademe someone picked one up for a hundred and eighty bucks. Definitly put a locker in the front. it will strengthen it buy stopping one side spin up and then shockloading it when the wheel hits the ground again. Youll also drive alot slower over obstacles and up hills just because you can
I had 8 teeth gone from mine! so order your locker now http://www.rocky-road.com for a front 7.5" toyota IFS one. And start the hunt for your front diff. Putting a locker in will transfer the breakages to the CVs(just dont power on full lock) and CVS are cheaper and easier to fix.

Pete, a SAS will not cost $1000, even if you do it yourself
Happy to take that as a deposit and time payments tho
Seriously tho, the IFS diff is a weak, but I ca't make head or tail of what you wrote.... sounds like the following:
Jacked truck up, then spun each wheel. One would spin, but the other wouldn't.
Put it in 4WD, then when one wheel was spun, the other spun in the opposite direction
If thats the case, then the truck is fine... open diffs do that, and the ADD simply locks one wheel to the other (through the diff)... although in 2WD you should still be able to spin one wheel... unless it was in gear and in 4WD...
Give me a call on 021 637 600. I don't have any 7.5" diffs left, but it sounds like that may not be the problem. Are you up here in Chch at the mo?
Steve

nope it works fine with the difflock and in fact is much better than only having freewheeling hubs except for long trips. All that it means now is the diff is locked and the right hand drive shaft still turns as per normal all the time but it drives the whole diff and turns the prop shaft to the transfer case. so you are turning more stuff but the benifit is when your offroad and you deselect 4wd the front two wheels are not locked togeather as you have split the left hand drive shaft giving you normal steering. but when you have free wheeling hubs and no add to achieve the same result you would have to get out and undo one hub!
To overcome the long distance driving problem (not having the front diff turn) i just got another drive flange for the right hand side and machined the spline out so the wheel freely rotates. the left drive shaft is split when disengaged 4wd and the right has no spline so the wheel cant turn the drive shaft. takes 5 mins to swap over. Or you could just get some free wheeling hubs.

Yes, the diff is still partly spinning. Have a look here for a better idea of how ADD works:
http://www.off-road.com/toyota/tech/add/index.htm
And how to over-ride it:
http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/tech/add/
I am pretty sure you can just remove the cap/hub from the permanent side wheel to let it free-wheel although it will allow dirt/moisture into the hub... have you found a diff?

na havnt got a diff yet. how do i find out what exactly is wrong with it?? if all is working fine then when in 4wd and in gear and you spin one wheel the other should go in the other direction souldnt it, cos it doesnt doesnt do that all the time, only on occasion... could it be anything elce? will probably start pulling it apart on the weekend.

oh oops i thought you were talking about when you had a locker in there and you drive it around in 2wd.
Just take the right side drive flange off and either put a free wheeling hub on there if it will fit or get the hole machined out in the drive flange so it clears the spline on the drive shaft. either way you will need something for long trips if you decide to put a locker in there. I just machine d mine out and bought another one for 20 bucks from ace 4wd in chch which i swap over when i go on a trip.
your right drive shaft is permantly connected and when add disengages the left shaf is split and the right keeps spinning but only the spider gears. Mine stil managed to get shit up in there and would sometimes catch and jolt while driving back from where i blew the diff.
