Yes,it's always been open to the public since the two roads were joined up.At the New Creek end , you payed a small fee to the man at the gate.
The farm has changed hands.
Been following up on the contact number for the Mackley.
Contact Farm manager Josh on 789-0239. Quite receptive to providing access at $10 per vihicle.
I am looking at doing this track in the next few weeks, can anyone tell me what type of track/s these are as I have heard it is a good trip, but need to know what vehicles are capable of driving it.
I'm told it follows the transmission towers, so assume its kept up to a good standard.
It's a good hard service road used for and maintaining the power line.
There is a river that you cross,if its been heavy rain within 24hours, can be a bit tricky. Check for deep holes before crossing. Cross in a large hourseshoe sweeping patturn, the holes will be visable
make sure you watch where your going one of the guys I was with got stuck, so I drove in to get round him and pull him out, but was watching him wheel spinn instead of watching where I was going and got stuck on top of a rock First time I've ever got a 10ft jet of water out of my front tyres....

Who knew Prados could fly?
99% of the time you woudn't have any problems with the crossing, only after a heavy spell of rain. Usually the crossing is about 40 to 90cm deep Just take care! [/img]
Not sure exactly, left westport around 11 oclock had play on way through , stopped for lunch at river ,then on out and home to Motueka at about 4.30. Track its self would proberly take around 1.5 hrs I guess.
