Couple of quick questions

Hi all

Been a long time reader here and got a couple of questions for any body with answer.

My mate's looking into a patrol with a blown motor and repowering. What is the maximum engine dimentions the will fit in to a patrol engine bay reasonably easy. I dont know what type of motor he wants to run but he mentioned its about 500kg :o do you reckon thats to heavy?
And also what is the maximun torque and horsepower rating for the draivetrain?

Probably get a big block in there without too much trouble; dimension wise. Anything will be lighter than the in-six that is already there. Drive train will handle anything you throw at it almost. Nissan has one of the strongest drive trains in standard trim. The down size of that is it has the least clearance under the diffs because of their size.

if i had the coin i would go for a 6.5L Chev V8 diesel or an LS1 Chev V8, or if you could find one cheap enough an LS2 mmmmm

I'd be looking for a chev to stick in there, half the weight of that old 4.2 and twice the power :mrgreen: :mrgreen:

hi i have a 6.2 v8 diesel in mine,4"springs in the front,2ïn rear to make it sit even, firewall,feet area do get warm,custom made 5 core alloy radator not much air flow around motor so does get hot on long hills, drive train handling it well so far, motor only been in it 8 months,cheers tim

p.s he just sent me a txt and said the engine had over 1000NM of torque and 250HP.
hope it happens now.LOL

What engine is he repowering with?
If it goes ahead, best you start a thread with lots of pics for us pic whores.

The VH45 that I have is about the same external demisions as a BB Chev so that will fit. There are plenty of Chev V8 diesel conversions been done in Oz and I've seen some photo's of one with a Ford powermax diesel. (that is insanely quick)
The problem is the chassis rails, not the engine bay. For most V8 conversions, to get the engine low enough you will have very little room for a decent set of headers. I got some log style manifolds made for mine but being turboed that is more than enough.
1000nm is no big deal for transfer case down but you'll start to have issues with life in the 5 speed and the auto will be very very borderline. I'm not sure of the torqe mine is putting out other than alot but 600hp is about the reliable limits for the auto.
The CV's will be the weak link beyond that but you can get Cro-moly ones that are 3x as strong.

There are plenty of TD42's that have 1000nm and they would be running up 330hp (flywheel), so having 1000nm and only 250hp makes me wonder why you would do the conversion particulary if the motor wieghs 500kg (sounds like the motor from an F250) which is 150kgs heavier than a TD42. Also if it is the motor I think it is then it won't rev so without an auto it would be a dog!

asked about the engine.said it was a straight 6 he was looking in to.
Id prefer a v8.

500kg is a very heavy engine,it well depend what he whats to do with it?if its going to be a tow vehicle no probs,as a 4x4 he would be better of with a lighter engine.

Why replace a six with a six, when you can work the existing Nissan motor to get similar power? I know the existing engine is stuffed. Just buy another Nissan and work that. Having said that, it would be good to see something different.
