Snowy Hills to Flooded Waimak - pics & vids - 9th Aug 08

Post by Lincoln »

On Saturday morning in Christchurch, I opened my curtains to see the Port Hills covered in snow so I jumped in the truck and headed up there. The Summit Road was closed off so I went for a wander and took some photos ... and built a snowman.

I then had a call from my mate saying he was heading to the Waimak to check out the flooding. After another mate getting stuck, we were flagged down by a Pajero who told us his mate was about to roll off a bank! It took three trucks to haul the guy back up. Me stabilising the front end to stop it tipping over and two other trucks hauling the back end up, carving a groove through the gravel.

The guy had been coming straight up the bank, thinking that he was gonna top out on a flat surface, only to find that his right wheels topped out and his left wheels hit thin air!

The main "play area" at the Waimak. Top section is a couple of months ago. Bottom section was Saturday:

Cheers. Yeah it was pretty cool seeing this happen just as we were about to leave. We'd made an earlier rescue but it was a pretty easy one. This one was more of a decent challenge! Wouldn't want to get away lightly. :)
