Hilux Gearbox & trans
Hilux Gearbox & trans
Does anyone have any info on all the different Hilux & Surf gearboxes & transfercases. And what will match up to what motor, gearbox & transfercase wise.
G52 and W56 are interchangeable. G52 was the 4- or 5-speed found in Hilux utes and the W56 is the series one surf box. Only external difference is the G52 has the two levers on one plate where the W56 has separate plates and separate levers (so you need to trim the trans tunnel hole a little to fit the W56 into a Hilux ute... t/c lever sits further back).
W56 is therefor the t/c you want for dual t/c conversions, since the lever is separate and the whole thing is complete. The G52 uses two push-rods back into the T/C from the single level-plate.
They both have the same physical dimensions, same output positions for front and rear, same crossmember and mount and same bolt patterns for the bellhousing.
It is said the W is stronger as it was built to handle the turbo power of a 2L-T
I've broken both types of box in my lux
W-series are easier to find to replace them
R-series boxes are not interchangeable with G or W's and have a chain driven transfer rather than the gear driven ones in a G or W
R-series are from gen 2 surfs.
Hope that helps... Also hope its right... my brain is not as good as it used to be - shook it up at Riks yesterday

Nah, they are all much of a muchness... what diffs are you running tho? If it was originally a turbo-d then its probably 4.3's... get some 4.5s or better some 4.8's which is what the NZ new petrol luxes had... will solve your gearing problems...
best way to do that is pick up a wrecked nz new hilux... probably score an LSD in the process, as most of our ones had them factory... about the only mod con they got here
4-speed, manual steer, chunky instrument cluster with a big speedo and an oil light!

Ive never done the clutch packs in an LSD, but I believe you can buy the shims frmo toyota for really cheap then just add them to the side and therefor tighten it up...
Might have a play with mine, since I'm going to leave the rear LSD and lock the front... won't be for a few weeks yet, but if you're in no hurry I'll report the process and how it went
