Rear Disk Brakes--Surf
Rear Disk Brakes--Surf
Fitting disks to rear axle seems pretty straight forward, what im wanting to know is what do you do to get hand/park brake to work?factory they're cable operated.can you use any old caliper or are rear calipers slighty different to accomodate handbrakes?
Any info would be cool.

Others have used maxima or mitsi calipers. I used front calipers off a mid 80's Subaru. (handbrake was on the front)
Ugly is a state of mind..... and the state of my truck!

Handbrake was on the front?Of your surf?
I know mines cable operated at the rear and unsure what i could do to make it work with calipers on the rear..

Mid 80's Subaru (Leones I think) had big single pot calipers on the front with the handbrake also on the front. They make good rear calipers for Cruisers and Lux's and have the handbrake levers to reconnect your handbrake.
Have a search through bulletproofs thread thers some pictures there

Re: Rear Disk Brakes--Surf
I've never fitted any but I think you cut off your old Toyota handbrake levers and weld them onto the subaru ones to line up the handbrake cables..... somebody will correct me if theres a better way of refitting the handbrake cable?
I've a funny feeling bulletproof may have mounted his calipers higher and done something different with the handbrake?

Just doing this conversion on my 70 series Cruiser at the mo. I'm using the mid 80s Leone front caliper. It has a cable operated handbrake which i should be able get working off the original handbrake cable.

Here is how Hosehusler did his, he had to make a lever to work it but here is a link and good writeup

OK i notice in Tims pics he has the caliper mounted towards the front of the wheel, Does this affect braking performance? cause most factory calipers are mounted towards the rear, or is it only a protection thing?

Think you will find it doesn't matter too much Jase. My personal preference is to go up on top as much as possible, (keeps them up out of the way)

mount it as high as possible but remember to keep the bleed nipple on the highest point or ya won't be able to bleed the brakes properly

Re: Rear Disk Brakes--Surf
i'll try to dig th pic out, all ya need to do is weld a L shaped bit of steel to the calaper leaver.

I believe he did this to keep the handbrake lever actuator out of the way of dirt etc, when I spoke to him (way back when it was done) he didn't want to modify the handbrake cable to the brake so a standard replacement was available.
This additional lever to stay out of the way was put at the back behind the diff (where the handbrake cable runs to) and the caliper put at the front, there is possibly other ways to achieve the same thing.
Edit: Matt bet me to it, if he can find a pic of another lever design it will probibly be like the design I was thinking of you could have a lever welded to the top of the diff or closer to the caliper it would also depend on the direction the handbrake mechanism has to be pulled (at the caliper), the Subaru may pull in a different direction.

Your pic didn't work for me. Here it is again.

So those are Nissan Maxima calipers. What year? Front or rear ones?

disc conversion with nissan calipers. Courtesy of De-Ranged
On trade me there are boy racer style hilux diff conversions where they are using toyota AE101 and RX 7 calipers.
I have also heard that a pajero disc and caliper can be used, just don't know what model pajero

Re: Rear Disk Brakes--Surf
This is what I did to the hilux and it works well .
I used the subaru 18mm caliphers and the ventilated front discs from a hilux which are 19mm. To make them fit I had them machined at the brake place to 18mm. I also had to machine the ends of the axle so the front discs were a good fit. This locates them. The other thing I had to do because of the self adjusting handbrake was make up a shim to reduce the end float in the bearing retainer, otherwise you will have spongy brakes.
To make the handbrake work properly you must throw the hilux cables away and put a lever in the middle.
Base Plate

Calipher

subaru handbrake cables entering truck

Cover for cables ,made from 100mm sewer pipe

Landcruiser handbrake lever

The setup is miles better than needed for cert.
0-100 kph and back to nought 3 times in 70 secs
1st stop 4.1 secs
2nd stop 4.0 secs
3rd stop 3.9 secs so they are improving with heat
Hope this helps
Cheers Richard

Using Mitzi calipers you will have to work out the levarage required if you are going to get it certed.
You will find that the handbrake comes on hard but still not enough to emercery stop
