A-Frame and brakes
A-Frame and brakes
Ok I have a small light weight Nissan which i Aframe around to save fuel the question is is it possable to hook up the brakes so i have in effect a braked trailer and if so can you explain how its done in terms a nissan owner can understand

Re: A-Frame and brakes
no you cant uless you want to bleed your brakes everytime you take the a frame off
Re: A-Frame and brakes

Re: A-Frame and brakes
Surely if you fitted the same hydraulic system as is on the front of trailers now and it was left attached to the A-frame folded upwards while you are 4x4ing and was plumbed into existing brakes on towed vechicle, even if you had to fit couple of shut of valves to stop pressure going back to the master cylinder. you should have braking to the front
or am i missing summink

Re: A-Frame and brakes
its all good and well to have it all set up, you can do it, but when you want to take the a frame OFF its a major PITA (4wheeling with the a frame on is a PITA aswell). Its better just to buy/build a trailer. Im sure theres some tricky way to get it to all work, but its still an a frame
Re: A-Frame and brakes
i was on outerlimits a while back and over in aus they have to have brekes on vehicals being a-framed by law and there are a few camper van/bus companys who do it (electricly).... i suggest going on outerlimits and talk to the aussys??

Re: A-Frame and brakes
plumb in a trailer master cylinder, or similar with an external plunger, into the front bumper with a pin to disconnect the plunger from the A frame when you remove it. Slot the mounting holes on the A frame slightly where it attaches to the towed vehicle so the plunger can be activated by the weight of the towed vehicle coming forward slightly under braking/deceleration etc.
Works in theory like a trailer brake system, probably won't work in practice????

Re: A-Frame and brakes
could possibly do something by mounting another set of calipers on the front discs and having another braking circuit exclusively for the a frame

you could buy a bigger Nissan or even better a Toyota to tow it with .....

70 series prado (KZJ78) and 90 Series Prado (KZJ95)
Re: A-Frame and brakes
i know a guy who a frames his 40 around and what he did was hooked up a small electric compressor with a small tank in his forty, found an air ram plus solenoid .made a bracket so he could attach it between his drivers seat frame and brake peddle .to activate it he hooked the solenoid up to his brake light circuit on the tow vechicle so that when the brakes are applied it lets air into the air ram pushing the brake peddle down on his forty and when the brake is released the air ram unloads thus releasing the brakes .

Re: A-Frame and brakes
Not sure about price but I was looking for something I could make into a transfer case handbrake and saved this link
http://www.trojan.co.nz/index.asp?PageID=2145834357 I think it would have to be on a seperate caliper and closed system

The diff will just lock up one wheel if you use it while driving, could make it dangerous

Re: A-Frame and brakes
i,m Thinking about putting my fj40 on a-frame. Easiest way i can think to add braking is to use old style cable braking linked to the handbrake, would be simple to disconnect and rehook up

Re: A-Frame and brakes
Stinky, now that you've learnt to turn the choke off and it runs properly wouldnt it be much easier to slap a B Reg on it and just drive the thing instead of mucking around with A Frames and stuff?
Re: A-Frame and brakes
want to save my tyre wear and fuel but point noted. Hows this idea you bring that toy of yours in and we will extend the tray to fit my nissan that will save my fuel and tyres

Built a few of these in uk. ok this is a basic one and i,m only replying to the comment that this dont pivot. If you a frame your truck you have no pivot (unless you hook it up to the steering) and to be honest this contraption is far more dangerous. It has hand winch to get it on and i expect they leave it attached so it dont fall off. But my main concern is the gaps for the wheels to fall into are way to small. The ones i have built have adjustments so the wheels fall down big time and then each wheel is ratchet strapped down. Looking at this one i would expect trouble under heavy braking. this would be ok towing a shitbox dirt track car down the road thats bout it
