fully submerged

Post by luke25 »

I want to make a random project of a paddock bash car and see if I can get it to drive in water over its roof (I plan on wearing my dive gear). Anyone got any ideas on what I should do to it to achieve this. My budget is $100 and that will include buying the car. Of course I will need a big snorkle on the intake. How about waterproofing the spark plug leads and dizzy - will I be able to just use heaps of silicone spray or will I need to waterproof them better then that. Do you reckon I'll need an exhaust snorkle? I guess I'll be needing to do something with the fuel tank breather. Maybe remove the fan belt if its got one. Is there anything else that will stop it working underwater (other then loosing traction!).

You'd have to do some serious shit to keep the ignition system running like running positive pressure inside the dizzy to stop the water from entering it

Or maybe extend the dizzy on a 6 foot shaft to keep it above the water

So maybe seal the dizzy in a plastic bag and run the engine breather pipe into the bag?

Yea, I agree. I bought my diesel engine in a car for $100. Pulled the engine and loom, and sold a few bits off the car body to defray costs and got a free engine for the land rover. If not in a hurry check around the towies that do towing work for the cops as they'll tow an abandoned car for th cops, hold onto fo the required period, then sell to defray storage and towage. Usually quite cheap.

You could run a small airbed pump sucking air from the snorkel pumping it into the gearbox, diffs, transfer case, and dizzy etc. This would be at about 2-4 psi I would think. You would probably need an exhaust snorkel as well I would imagine. Go for it and post pics of the build and trials.

It is impossible to do unless you weigh it down. The law of phyisics say a cubic metre of air will lift a tonne and it will float away.

Many Nissan people say to me because their truck is heavier than my Hilux they can handle deeper water. Load of rubbish because their trucks are lower to the ground they have more floatation and are lighter than me.

Cheers Richard

Surely on the flotation side of things it will sink properley if I open the doors and let the water in?
And do the gear boxes and diffs really need to be pressurissed - I know getting water in there is bad but its not going to kill it in a day is it? Or will fill the case and hydraulic lock it

The floatations only really a problem if your in moving water like a fast flowing river that will push the vehicle around, still water would be ok but it would most likely have a soft boggy bottom so you better get some tractor tyres for it

Hey That's not fair kev, it didn't get stuck from electrical failure, it got hung up on a log  Motor did run ruff afterwards as ECU under seat got wet. I eventually sealed it in resin. Worked.
