Terrano tyre carrier noise
When I go over bumps I can hear a "wobbling" or "juddering" noise coming from the rear tyre carrier on my 93 terrano. My mates 95 one does the same. The tyre carrier bushes see to be nice and tight, as I can make them clunk if I lift the lh end of the carrier up and down. I saw on a website what to do if the bushes in the carrier were worn and they make a distinct clack clack noise. Any ideas? Both of the anit rattle rubbers next to the latch are present.

Re: Terrano tyre carrier noise
It will be the bushes in the hinges. The pins are like a riviet and they seize up making the carrier stiff to open but it wears the bushes and it rattles.
I had a rattle one that i tried to get the pins out of. ground one end off and tried to punch the pin out with the idea of redrilling and replacing with larger bolt. Problem was couldnt get pin out. Maybe a press and some heat would have worked.
Found a second hand one on TM for $1.50
Problen solved.

Re: Terrano tyre carrier noise
Yep mine doe the same, I wonder if there is anyone who might like to earn some amber fluids by replacing the pins with a bearing or something to stop this horrid noise?

Ok people, move along. Nothing to see here. Thank you, move along.

Re: Terrano tyre carrier noise
It was the bushes in the hinges, replaced them with genuine nissan parts, for the pins P/N NI-E724541G60 (2@7.91ea) & bushes P/N NI-E724741G60 (4@$5.73ea) (not including gst), ground the mushroom head off & smashed the pins out, the bushes were rusted out. The upper one was sloppy on the truck & the bottom one didn't seem to be, but both were sloppy off the truck & unloaded.
There is a website that details the replacement.

Mine didn't put up too much resistance, as I had CRC'ed them a few times in the weeks prior to knocking them out.

Re: Terrano tyre carrier noise
Did you simply grind the heads and punch them out?
Would it be a simple case of inserting a grease nipple to the bracket where the oil hole is for added lubrication?

Yep, got the angle grinder on the small mushroom heads, once they were ground flat you can see a faint outline of the shaft, smack it out with a drift. I got some grease nipples & will tap the holes. I reckon these flog out due to lack of lubrication, if there was a grease nipple on them people would know to lube them.

Re: Terrano tyre carrier noise
Great stuff, lastly did Nissan have the parts in stock, or did they have to order them in?
How are the new pins secured?

Re: Terrano tyre carrier noise
I got mine at cockram nissan on manchester st chch, they had to order them in from japan, took about a week and a half, the securing of the pins is achieved by a bunch of splines at the top of the shank (by head), smash it in, it should lock. I might try to mushroom the other end once fitted, im currently getting round to tapping the grease holes & fitting grease nipples. There is currently a whole new carrier on trademe for $100, but I like to fix things myself......

Re: Terrano tyre carrier noise
I will go in there tomorrow and order a set of pins and sleeves for my carrier.
Do you think there will be enough meat on the hinge for grease nipples to thread into it ok?
Keep us updated on how that turns out please.

Yes, I think the hinges have enough meat to take a grease nipple, I should have fitted them by the time your pins turn up, so I will keep you posted. Dont forget to CRC your hinges a few times, for less frustration!

Re: Terrano tyre carrier noise
Finished tapping the hole to fit a grease nipple, used a metric 6 - 1.0 tap, after drilling the hole out with a 5mm drill. One hitch, I realised that if the grease nipple is left on they will be snapped off when the tyre carrier is shut. So I intend to only have the nipple on when greasing & put some tape over the hole afterwards.
