The old bucket road??

The one that used to go from the Kopuku Coal mine to the Meremere power station??

I "heard" its closed as the the holes were getting huge as its accross a peat swamp.

When i was a kid when we lived in Maramarua that was a good gravel road, we used to go that way when we went shopping to pukekohe.

Interested to know though.

I'm going up to Auckland Tomorrow, so maybe i will have a look as i go past??

There's a whopping big gate over the Meremere end of it now with all sorts of "keep out" signs.

It looks like a dead straight gravel road from what I can see from the gate. They may have repaired it before gating it off.

Access to the coal-bucket road requires a permit and bond payment for a key to the gate. The road is actually private land now and belongs to the local Iwi as they had to be given first right of refusal by the Government when Genesis no longer required it. Last year it was being leased out to some company for testing laser leveling equipment.

However, they are obligated to allow access to the surrounding DoC (or F&G) land via the road if you apply for it.

The road itself is pretty well cut up beyond the boat ramp.
