Sick engine?

Post by kiwipete »

Just wondering if there are any diesel mechannics on the forum in the Chch area that might like to have a quick look at my engine and offer a diagnosis on its woes.
A brief description is; it has a rattly sorta sound when its cold, but sort of there when warm.
At a certian rev range, it is very loud indeed.
I have recently had the injector timing and tappets looked at. Appart from this noise, it is running the best it has for some time as far as pickup etc goes.
Im not after someone to repair it as I will take it back to my usual service outfit, I just want an opinion.
Ok people, move along. Nothing to see here. Thank you, move along.

Had the engine looked at and here are the results;

Leakage
1=5%
2=7%
3=10% - Small amount past inlet valve
4=8% - Small amount past inlet valve

Compressions
1=470
2=460
3=450
4=440

The noise was a faulty electric return valve causing advanced timing when cold, they disconnected the valve and it is all sweet now.
Apparently Nissan experimented with this but no longer use it, its a little like an auto choke on a petrol so im told.

So you now have no timing advance at higher rpm?

Take a look at the ERG valve it is under the intake manifold towards the rear and is a shit to get to BUT it can be done with out removeing the inlet manifold.
It has most like blown a hole in the gasket letting spent diesel back into the intake which it was supposed to do but not in the volume it is and this excess causes a rattle which i thought in my terrano was the cam starting to flog out one of the berring houseings.
Took about half a day to repair it all i did was get some real thick heat proof gasket from ripco and totaly blanked it off problem was solved and it appares to have more grunt as well.
Dont forget to remove the vacum line to the valve which operated it orignaly and blank it off as well.
Hope this helps u out :)

Thanks, but it was sorted as per above posts.
The problem now is really sooty oil residue coming out of the relief valve on the intake manifold. Just notice this last week after a hard hil climb, felt like i was pulling a fully loaded trailer on the sealed road, no guts at all. :? :? :? and now; it seems; the bands may be slipping on the auto tranny when it kicks down going up hill. Plenty of oil on the dipstick, just a squealing noise so I assume its the tranny.
