Thinking> MQ/Mk Axles under a V8 Landrover??

Post by gary_in_nz »

Hows things??

Been thinking today about putting some Nissan Safari MQ/MK axles under my 109 V8 Landrover. I want something that can handle the power as the stock setup is a touch weak. I was wanting to go with the MK/MQ as they are getting easier to find in Buggered trucks and they are leaf spring to start with. A few questions I need to check if someone can help me out.

I'm hoping to do a Spring over Axle setup with the Nissan axels under the 109. I know that I will need to lengthen a few things, steering rod, drive shaft, brake lines, anything else??

I'm handy with a grinder and welder so i would need to move the Nissan leaf spring mounts to the correct position for the Landrover. What are the legalities of spring over conversions?? As long as they are secure??

Will the Existing Brake cylinder be ok for the Nissan brakes, i think they are disc up front, drum rear?? or would i be better off sourcing a Nissan one to suit??

What are the stock diff ratios of the MQ/MK LWB??

any other issues anyone can think of??

I'm just asking as i can pick up an almost complete rolling chassis cheaply thats local, which is a bonus for being out here on the East Coast.

why not a spring over?? was looking for the cheapest way around to get an almost capable truck. leaf springs arent cheap to buy so the parabolics would be the next option?? i cant find any in nz??

really? i got some on mine.. not too keen on em though.. i'm sprung over but with the para's on i'm too tall... need some standard springs to lower the soa height.. but you'd need the para's sua to add height..

hmmmmmmmmmmmmm........

now theres something there i'm not quite clickin to....

is there something im not clicking to?? as the landrovers are narrow, by lifting it and setting it on a wider wheel base of the nissan's may help stabillity a bit??

mq diffs are not a hell of a lot wider than LR diffs. even hilux diffs are pretty narrow on em. You dont need height on a land rover. You can cut guards to fit 35's on them easy. I went the lift route on coils but have now settled back to standard height and running 35's (not done yet though.

In fact:

he runs 37" claws on spring under with no lift

No reason at all to lift a landrover. Guard chopping on them is a 5 year olds job

Mamaku 4wd in the BOP have Rocky mountain parabolics. fit some 2" longer shackles will work sweet. Have you thought about fitting hilux diff heads to the std land rover housing and then getting howart eng to make some axles. could be a lot less hassle. the hilux diff head will fit in the same hole and the bolt holes are clocked so all you have to do is drill and tap. look here for more info http://www.seriestrek.com/toyotadiffs.html but don't be put off by his prices I'm sure Howart eng will be alot cheaper

howie puts the toyota centre into the landrover housing and used landrover crown wheel and pinon. also worth a thought. But if you have a salisbury rear I dont think you will break anything

yeah salsbury rear, its one of the ex army 109 v8's just the front is weak on these, already done a diff and a half shaft in  if there were some stronger axle replacements i would look into that aswell, since they are bassically rangie running gear, except the half shafts are shorter from memory??

no doubt the landies are high enough, my safari with 50mm spring and 50mm body lift, the seat heights are about the same now. i dont really want to cut any guards as i would like to be able to change it all back to orriginal if the need arose (ie some how they started selling for good coin)

If your braking axles, Howart eng can make stronger axles plus the 109 cv are used as an upgrade for rangies, also pleanty of after-market parts for rover diffs, like toughend R&P sets, tougher axles, you could always put in an arb locker in the front might cost a bit more than a diff swap, but would stregthen up the center with the bonus of a locker.
I've seen a few transplant projects not finished  including my own.
Its a lot more work than what people make out, lots of small stuff which adds up and hits you in the pocket. :) plus more time off the off road
What size tyres are you planing to run?
