snorkels
snorkels
whats the deal with snorkels? obviously i understand that they are a sort of 'insurance' incase you go in deep water. but do they actualy mean that you should be driving in deeper water? what about the rest of the truck? how much deeper can go go with a snorkel fitted?
Most truck manufactures in their infinate wisdom
put the air intake somewhere around the grill of the vehicle. What this means is potentially you could take a slug of water to the piston from someone driving past and splashing a big puddle at you.
By putting this higher you lessen the opportunity. Having your intake at roof level also gives the vehicle clearer air when driving in dusty or raining situations as the sray of dust of water is thinner thus giving your donk a fresher breath.

It takes an egg cup full of water to detroy a high compression diesel engine
does this mean with a snorkel you can drive with the water half way up the windshield
http://www.offroadexpress.co.nz/modules ... _photo.php
answer NO
if you want to go real deep, buy a jet boat
you always run the risk of getting stuck, snorkel or no snorkel, once you're stuck the water finds its way in
If you have a snorkel you can avoid that critical egg cup full I mentioned at the start
hope this helps

I recently got suck in a river and the mess it makes is not worth the risk, wet carpets, water in bearings, etc, plus the risk to all of the eletrical equipment that we have in our vechiles, If it is absolutly nessacery to do so then have the ropes ready, but always try to find another way around!!.

If you are in Chch then keep your eye on the buy sell, most of the companies that sell them advertise in the 4WD parts section... expect to pay about $300 for one.
I used to sell em, but they cost $295 to import (roughly) and its not worth the hassle to sell em for $5 profit... especially when heaps of other companies are happy to

have you got an oil bath airfilter ?? if so remove and use the rubber pipe directly off the carb and fit drain pipe up the window frame, i mounted a filter on the top of mine, actually looked quite proffesional, might have a pic somewhere, might be thinking pre digital camera tho

Nope its a barrel type filter on an ld28 it looks like it will be fairly straight forward the intake for the filter is already pointing into the right front guard so all i need to do is cut a hole in the guard to the enigine bay run the pipe under the gaurd cut another hole near the windscreen some were and then run it up the outside. Gee that makes it sound like a 20min job

I put a safari snorkel on my truck but I never trust it as anything more than water resistant in deep water
No point hydrolicing your engine thinking your invincible.
The safari snorkel fits onto the cruiser airbox inside the innergaurd and relies on a rubber O ring and lots of silicone to seal the joint, all the other joins in the snorkel I can see and trust but the one inside the inner guard that I cant visually see is always an unknowen to me?
I had a flange made up to adapt onto the holley carb and that seems to seal well

Sh*t.... never thought about the rocker breathers? Might have to give that some thought!
The dizzys a HEI with silicone sealer smeared all around the base, the holleys stock without whistles etc, havent run into problems yet but have intentions of putting a quadrajet onto it (on the round tuit list), a couple of mates have run them and seem to find them ok. The fuel pumps got a return to tank line on it and that probably helps the holley by not force feeding it so badly when the floats are off level?

I'll stick with plan B and avoid deep water when I can, I've got about 5km of riverbed driving to get into my bach (crib for the others) when I take my truck in there and it can get a bit dodgey when it floods
......can always spend an extra night in front of the fire drinking beer and go home the next day rather than sink the truck
