Procedure engaging and disengaging 4WD Surf?

Post by TimskiT »

Hi everyone,

Can someone please tell me what the correct procedure is for engaging 4WD and then taking my Surf out of 4WD again is?

We've had heavy snow over here in the UK and I've been into 4LOW and 4HI for most of the day, but sometimes I noticed that even when I didn't push the 4WD button on the ratio transfer stick and engage 4LOW/4HI the 4WD light comes on on the dash!

Also when you disengage 4WD should the ratio transfer stick be in 4HIGH? If I put it into neutral and then try to move as normal with the manual gearbox I get no drive so I assumed that the ratio transfer stick should be in 4HI for normal driving without 4WD engaged.

TIA

youre surf is obviously later than a 90.......

engaging 4wd

put it in neutral ,select high or low then push the 4wd button as you know the light will show.

with this setup you can actually drive along at say 30 ks(people say more but that when drive train bind up occurs)and hit the 4wd button and it will engade 4wd.

ive always done it stationary on my surf:wink:

hope this helps,if not clear let me know......

I seem to recall with the pushbutton 4WD models that if you engage 4WD LO then it will force the 4WD to engage regardless of button in or out. This is probably whats happening.

If you select HI then it will only come on when the button is depressed (like Marvin the android :P)

Thanks guys that's fine but for normal driving where should the ratio stick be? Is it ok as long as the 4WD button is not pressed?

Normal driving is in Hi-range and if you need 4wd then just push the button in.

you have 4wd hi range for hi-speed 4wding and 4wd low range for hill climbs and tricky situations where a slow speed is critical.

4wd low range selected means that it is in 4wd no matter how you press the little button on the side of the lever. If you then move to 4wd high range and the button is out then you will enter two wheel drive. if the button is depressed then you will stay in 4wd but in high range. This is perfectly ok as long as there is slip between the front and rear wheels, ie driving in snow like you have done all day. as soon as the snow has melted and turned to slush ie just like driving in the wet then you want to disengage 4wd by pressing the button so the light goes off.

What happens is you get transmission windup this is where the front wheels turn in a bigger circle than the rear and when in 4wd the front is locked to the rear and thus fight each other. When they fight each other something either breaks or you come to a complete stop and the only way to get out of this is slowely jack a wheel up.

hope this helps a little.

If you passing through chester, throw a snow ball at my brother

Cheers Mike that has put my mind at rest!

So your Bro is in Uncle Fester eh? Will do we still have quite a bit of snow here in Mold.

Thanks everyone for the replies, yep mine is a 1994 Jap import, 3 litre SSR-G with Recaro interior and a manual box...love it. It's my 2nd Surf used to have a 2.4 Auto on a 91 plate but my GF's Dad has got that one now. So now I have another one, my Dad has just bought one, my GF's Nan has a 3 Litre aswell. LOL

Ah, the global toyota family... how warm and fuzzy it feels :P

Good to see we are attracting members from all over the world now... might have to make the next ORE xmas bbq an international event... we can all go over to the UK for bangers and mash :)
