Automatic Escudo

Post by ONOescudo »

There was a rite up here on automatic transmission and manual gearbox, some time ago, but cant find it.
Was thinking of converting to an auto trans or buying another Escudo with auto trans and swapping my manual 5.12 axles over? (Lower ratio)
Main benefits
1. To get lower gearing and easier take off on slopes. Not having to slip/drop the clutch and just spin the wheels. Slower approach speed (which would work with diff lockers, soon to fit)
2. To change down. Able to select lower gear on the move. Eg. Charging up a large hill in 2nd at red line rpm. Running out of power because of length or grade of hill. 1 of 2 things happens. Either stall in 2nd gear or/ attempt to change to 1st and lose momentum and stall.
3. To change up. Eg Pulling out of a mud hole in 1st gear and changing into second gear to rotate tyres faster on the greasy exit.
What’s your opinion on autos?

after using auto offroad I dont like going back to using manuals. Mainly because you can change gears without losing momentum, you cant get crap in the clutch and you can left foot brake. It makes crawling over things slowly easy as hell (if you dont have low gears). They invented brakes for going down hills 8)

yea there is, on some steep downhills though they can go a bit faster than you really want but you get used to it

Have I got a deal for you :)

I have just come across a 91 escudo with an auto trans , that I dod not need . To save having to buy , set up and swap diffs etc , I could sell you the auto out of this one with all the bits you need to swap , ie kickdown cable etc and the gearbox crossmenber if they are different ( not sure have not looked ) . Would include the flex plate etc .

Was looking at offers around $300 but make me a good one for all the bits and you will be away laughing , this would include the t/case . Pm me if you like . At a push I may be coming down to welly in begining of Oct so may be able to take that far for a few $$$ or Beers .
