Canterbury trip??? any ideas

Post by nickcampbell »

gidday all, this forum has become inactive for canterbury now, since my last trip at selwyn river... just wandering if anyone is keen for something like this weekend or next. Dont know of many places, but would been keen for like worselys track or something? or someone wont to start a trip for moderate level? or just a play somewhere would be nice

Where is everyone keen to go? At this time of year i guess snorkels, mud tyres and rated hooks are required for most trips.
Has anyone been down the ashley since the floods etc? It could be a good option

I have been thinking we need to do a canty trip for a while and almost started a thread last week. The Ashley is lots of fun at the moment as there are lots of banks etc to play on out in the open river where it doesn't affect the banks and also there have been new tracks bulldozed on the side and the water has washed through and made them more interesting and a bit muddy. The river will be down enough now to cross (I was crossing it between the last two highs no problem). Still a little brown but should be clear in a week with no heavy rain. Last I was on the actual 4x4 track was just before the big rains. My main play area is down stream from the Rangiora bridge and especially the rail bridge. Only just got low enough to drive between them with one vehicle (and my level of confidence).

Does every one want to do a trail along or a bit of a play around?

Would pay to check out the track to see how much it has suffered over the last rains - if it has had some 'big' trucks through it it might be touch on wee wheels and body work. I might get time to go have looksee , but downstream is always suitable some where.

Best to meet down in the river bed or in the domain just before the bridge, the road is not overly wide on the north side

Yeah ok, confirmed time/meeting date ect is: 10am sunday 21st of september, at asheley river, cross over the bridge (from Millton ave, rangiora, and turn right just after the bridge barrier finishes, and drive down the dirt track onto the shingle area) i dont have a UHF radio either, i have radios though but they are for marine/boating.. so we can just go in the middle... hope to see a few people there, hopefully someone that knows where to go :)

Getting into the river this way in this area is frowned upon by the district council, especially so in spring and summer due to nesting birds. A better entry point and the one approved by council and combined clubs inc is the Rossiter rd further past the Loburn turnoff on your left. May I suggest you all meet at the park area just before the Ashley bridge out of rangiaora and head to Rossiters Rd as a group. I think my missus is off to Akaroa this weekend, so I am very tempted to throw the boys in the truck and join yous. I went over the Nth Canty river bridges last weekend on my way to Murchison and they looked like new soft river beds.
