Query about rim width/tyre size for 91 VX Cruiser (auto)

Post by Baldrick »

Hi - am considering getting some bigger tyres for my truck/armchair. Currently running 31x10.5x15 ATs and considering 33' in either 11.5 or 12.5 x 15's.

My question is - what width rims do I need? As I gather that they wont fit on the standard 15x7 Crusier rims. :?:

Not too worried about lifting etc at moment - but will be suspension lifted in future.

Cheers

Baldrick :)

:D welcome aboard mate

my dad is doing the same thing, bigger tyres, he has a 2"suspension lift and is either going to run 33's as it sits or do a 40mm body lift and run 35's...unsure at this stage which way he will go

as for the rim size, from all the info i have gathered, if your going to be running them on the road then go for 15x10"rims if your going to run 33x12.5x15 tyres

my 2c

i would go to 15x8 white spokes you can get them for 4 $65 bucks a rim. 33s only come in 12.5 inches or 10.5 inches wide on bf goodrich mts. i have tried many different mt tyres over the last 6 years and found the bfg radial mud terrain km to be the best all rounder, good in the mud and on the road, you will pay through the nose for them though they are not cheap, $330-$375 depending on where you go. with tyres you get what you pay for really. The other option is keep your 31,s for road use and buy a off road tyre eg xplys like simex , swamper or maxxis. it is a pain to swap wheels over all the time.

Most will say use 8" rims (which are fine) but I and quite a few others in ChCh run 33s on factory Toyota 7" rims. I've been running mine for the last 5 years with no probs at all. Nice tight fit on the bead which is good.

I do 20 clicks a year including a lot of offroad and open road travel and never had any probs. I run BFGs muds and currently trying 33x10.5s, but for most of that time have run 12.5s. Tyres have always been fitted by BFG agents with no probs or concerns expressed.

Save yourslf the dollars and stick with what you've got - just my 2 cents worth.

Now this gives rise to more questions??? : )

Cool... thought about keeping the AT's for "general" stuff and getting some MT's for over here in the "usual" weather (sic....not rain but sheets of horizontal water - but we are getting used to it....along with the webbed feet  )

Had considered those horribly expensive Simex or similar...but...we also like travelling to Otago area 4wd'ing. So MT's are probably a cheaper option.

How do they go if you air-them down?

Do you recommend running tubes as well?

Where is a good place to get them from? Things seem a little limited over here at times?

Thanks guys :D

you can run tubes to keep the beads on a bit better when you lower pressures, a narrow rim may help as well, why not get a set of chains? improves traction consideably in mud clay and wet grass. a pain to fit but can make all the difference in the sticky stuff, have a price around tyre shops, also check out trade me etc for cheap deals.

Yea - gotta love that West coast weather and Reefton is a great 4wd base with heaps to do. Still without the rain it'd be brown and dry like Canty and Otago with no bush and not so much mud....

I am happy to drop to 18-20 without tubes but anything less will definitely need tubes - everything is a compromise pretty much like the rest of life.

If you do use tubes, get heavy duty ones and make sure any labels/stickers are well removed from inside the tyre before fitting otherwise they run the risk of chaffing on the tube with puncture being the result. :(
