Lockright Locker and Fiddles???

Post by SirGerald »

Currently have a welded rear diff in my samurai trials truck with fiddles on the front.

Was impressed with a similar vehicle using a lockright locker on the rear especially the turning circle compared to mine and thinking about making some sort of changes to save smashing the front cv's all of the time using the brakes.

We are a little unsure how they work, and wonder if one was put in the rear, could you run fiddles on the rear as well, or would the locker work against the fiddles??????

Any thoughts welcome!!!!!!!

If you move the fiddles to the back I would look at moving the lunchbox style locker to the front as you can brake the wheel that is spinning in the back

If you put a locker in the back and did the same thing with fiddles you won't break the front CV's but you could break the driveshaft, gearbox or diff ring and pinion (whatever is weakest) as you are effectivley over driving the brakes and forcing the lokka to unload on the unbraked side (not what it is designed to do)

Go open or LSD on the diff if you use fiddles and look at what you can do in the front to get more traction without putting too much stress on the CV's.
Legal disclaimer: Any information I may have provided is worth exactly what you paid me for it.

Nope, It will not work.

An Auto locker in the rear is essentially the same in priciple as a welded diff when it comes to independant brakes.

With an auto locker, the diff is always locked, then when you turn a corner on a firm surface, it allows the outside wheel to over speed the inside wheel.

Basically the locker allows one wheel to over speed the other, but does not allow any under speeding to occur.

If you ran independant brakes on the rear with the auto locker, by applying the brake to one wheel, you are effectivly trying to make the braked wheel under speed the non braked wheel, which can not happen due t0 the way the locker works, so the independant brakes will be totally in effective.

If you want to improve your turning circle a little bit, put the auto locker in the rear and leave the brakes up front, if you want to improve it more fit a selectable locker in the rear, or an LSD, or open diff, and fit brakes to the rear as well as the front (seeing as you already have the fronts hooked up  ) and get a good co-driver that knows how to use the brakes as a traction aid

yea im running a detroit locker rear and fiddles front... as people have mentioned you cant have fiddles on same axles as an auto locker but you can run a arb or similar.
