Hey Fearless,
Hows Opotiki going these days? Spent quite a few years passing thru and living around there and up the coast years ago. Awesome memories.
I recently made a snorkel out of 3 inch exhaust tube and I post a few shots of whats I've worked up.
Three inch exhast tube with pre-bent sections all mig'ed together to produce this. It was galvanised only becuse it was cheap to do at $20. If I hadn't have had it galv'ed, I'd have sealed up one end and tipped rust paint into it and sloshed it around till I figured everything had been coated.

The snorkel as it enters the guard is held in place with a 3" clamp for exhaust pipes bolted to the guard. The exhaust tubing stops just inside the guard. It then has a fairly tight but rounded bend of rubber tubing to the water and dirt sump I made using plumping fittings. I had to silicone-seal sections of exhaust tubing into each end of the sump in order to continue with the rubber hose sections.

This sump is at the lowest point of the snorkel tubing and does catch all water and other debris that flows down the pipe. It means I don't need to rush out and turn the snorkel head around everytime it rains heavy or whenever I drive throught trees or whatever. Leaf litter and dust and water has been emptied out on many occassions and only very little of the lightest leaves has found there way to the filter.
The sump is emptied via a large 'O-ring' sealed hatch, again, a standard plumping fitting. This hatch is on the bottom of the '90 degree bend section.

I have used rubber coated nylon 'wire' reinforced corrugated tubing for all connecting tubes between the steel exhaust tube, sump, and airbox. It is flexible enough for smooth bends, and is reinforced against suction-induced collapse should the snorkel get blocked.
I got the exhaust tube and the sump material from the obvious places. The rubber tubing I got from Dewtec here in Palmerston North. They are the EnZed hose doctors place and carried a whole range of piping. A similar place would be found in either Opotiki or Whakatane I guess but this tubing was the most difficult piece to get.
Hope these pictures help and good luck with the snorkel.
