Hanmer Hagglund ride.

Post by petefj40 »

Me and my mate and our daughters went for a Hagglund ride today. What a blast! I highly recommend it.
That thing is the ultimate off road vehicle!! It's a pitty the camera view doesn't show what angles we are on. The Hagglund will travel up and down a 85 degree slope. It will handle a 45 degree side angle and can do all that will a total load of 9 ton. They are in a league of there own.

Our driver was telling us that a few days ago some young lad tried driving his 4wd down that last slope we were on. He got it wrong and ended up rolling down most of the way. he said he was lucky to walk away from it. They had to use the Hagglund to recover his truck. We noticed parts of his truck on the way down.
That was the slope I took my quad bike down and I ended up getting it stuck. But did manage to recover it and carry on riding down. It doesn't look like much of a slope, till you're on it.

I went on that ride at the Antarctic centre to. We all really enjoyed that and i hear they've just increased the track length so i might try it again. But the Hanmer Hagglund ride is awesome! The angles they get you on will impress ya. And they know their stuff. I guess you'd expect that as they are the agents for the Hagglund in New Zealand. The driver was a hard case. We totally enjoyed it.

I've been to Hanmer many times and seen the Hagglund ride advertised. But I never became interested in going on the ride till I tried taking my quad bike through some of the tracks they used. They really are naily!! They tell us that the tracks are on private property. But at the time we didn't know that.

At the end of this following clip (where I get stuck) is that same slope the Hagglund goes down.

I drive past that place a few times a week Jerry. I should try it out. The terrain they are on is flat. But I'm sure they have some good tracks to drive their tanks on. It would be good just to check out the tanks.

Myself and 2 others drove down that track on a recent trip to hanmer, not knowing what it was like, much steeper than the vid shows, quite greasey with clay base.it also leans to one side quite a bit in some places.I tryed going up it got about 1/4 the way, couldent get past one of the muddy bogs :D
It was the very next day that the guy rolled, nothing to do with the group we were in.

Tanks are great fun to drive... two levers, two pedals and away you go....

You sound as lucky as we were when we went on those tracks Shane. As soon as I told them I'd traveled on them they were quick to tell us that you're not allowed. They stated that they are the only people that have the access. It's on forestry land. You can get fined if you're caught on them. And if you have an accident on those tracks you won't be covered by ACC.

Just thought I'd warn others if they're thinking of doing the same.
