auto leak in me xj

just pulled up me driveway and notice me jeep has left its calling card...leaks coming out of back of auto were drive shaft goes in...is this just a seal and a easy fix or abit more to it ...want to fix it myself so any info would be cool.....cheers

Rear driveshaft goes into the rear of the transfer case. In that case, you would need to replace the rear output seal. It should not be a big drama, only if you can find it locally. If you know which transfer case it is (likely to be NP231), it would be easier to find the part.

Keep in mind that the transmission and transfer case both contain same fluid type (ATF 3 or 4), but they are isolated from each other. In other words, transfer case has different amount of fluid just for itself. There is no fluid sharing with the tranny.

Can you post a photo of the leak, it would help in isolating the problem as well.

thanks for that tj,i would say it was coming from the transfer case...just went out and had a better look.would put up pics but cant. HAVE tried and tried to much for my head : . are parts hard to get ie seals ..... cheers again mate...

You can try JustJeeps on Trademe or try David at www.wooders.com.au. They are both helpful (one is in Whangarei, other in Sydney). David knows just about everything off the top of his head and can source parts very very quickly. I have bought stuff from him in the past without any problems. If nothing else, call him and pick his brain (he doesn't mind talking about Jeeps on phone forever).

Otherwise try Continental Cars in Auckland (Jeep Dealer). They are probably the best of the dealers I have come across and their prices are mostly reasonable too.

NP231 was used in YJ, XJ, TJ and some Grands as well. So the seal can be listed under a lot of different numbers.

I may be wrong but my '95 xj has the NP242 transfer case, so just check before you get too far. The difference is that the NP242 has a hi-4wd position that will allow you to drive on the road, centre diff not locked. So it has hi 2wd, hi 4wd part time, hi 4wd full time, and low 2wd.

Thanks Ian, yes some XJs did come with the NP242. Its easy to tell the difference, either look at the selector and tell us what do you have or look at the round ID plate on the back of the transfer case and it will say whatever type it is. The ID plate would look like this:

Can you tell where the leak seems to be coming from. If its the seal, it would be around where the rubber boot is (towards the top of the photo).

BTW, Commad-Trac (NP 231) is not really that different from Selec-Trac except that Command-Trac is part-time (i.e. it has no full time 4wd option).

Try www.rockauto.com for finding the exact part number. It would be a Timken seal, I am sure there would be a local truck part supplier that stocks Timken parts. Just don't tell them its for a Jeep. Find the exact part number from www.rockauto.com.

Just remembered, on the older style units you have to be careful because the bearing at the output shaft does not hold the oil in. So when you take the driveshaft off or the seal off, some transfer case oil will start draining out. It might actually be easier (rather cleaner) if you just drain the case before changing the seal and put fresh oil (ATF 3 or 4) in. It might be time to change the oil anyway.

As long as there are axle stands supporting the weight, I wouldn't want to be under it just on jacks of any kind.

This is probably the best write-up of doing an SYE on a NP242 you can find. I know you are only changing the seal, so you can skip the whole middle part of it.
