Thanks Ian, yes some XJs did come with the NP242. Its easy to tell the difference, either look at the selector and tell us what do you have or look at the round ID plate on the back of the transfer case and it will say whatever type it is. The ID plate would look like this:

Can you tell where the leak seems to be coming from. If its the seal, it would be around where the rubber boot is (towards the top of the photo).
BTW, Commad-Trac (NP 231) is not really that different from Selec-Trac except that Command-Trac is part-time (i.e. it has no full time 4wd option).
