Hi pinion front diffs

Post by Jafa »

Okay boys, tell me what years, models, and ratios etc landcruisers have high pinion front diffs?
Will they fit the standard hilux housing,
I'm after a 4.88 High Pinion for my junk, I think out of a 80 series?
Cheers for any info

I can tell you that the 80 series does have a high pinion fornt diff. Most have 4.1 ratio though.

Would be a good way to get a factory cruiser locker into your truck though.

prados aswell, but as jungle said 4.1s are the most commons for the simple reason most of them are driven by diesels  ,but you can get 4.88 ring and pinion kits............

but why you goin hp?have you a mega lift?or you using a prado housing with the reversed idler arm.......

just curious jafa thats all :D

Not a mega lift, 100mm, but teh HP helps with driveline angles

I don't know if the HP Landcruiser diff head will fit a Hilux housing, but if you are going for a HP Landcruiser diff and plan to give it a bit of abuse, then make sure you get the later model double skin diff head. If you plan on giving it serious abuse then add a bit more strengthening.

A mate of mine fitted the complete front axle unit from a >1990 PZJ70 (5 cyclinder) in to his Hilux . It was a NZ spec model so the diff ratio was the same as his Hilux. This gave him Hi Pinion , Bigger CVs, & larger side bearings

This may be of some use.

L/C from 91 on including Prado's 93 on have the larger CVs and run the 8"diffs

The diff head (Carrier Sub-Assy, differential, front) part number changed 08/1992. The CVs (Shaft Sub-Assy, Front Axle Outer) changed 08/1992, 04/1994 and 01/1995. I don't know what the significance of the changes are.

MU Front HILUX axle with 4.88 high pinion front fitted... direct bolt-in replacement for the standard 8" diff.

The 2.4TD Prados ran a 4.88 high pinion front... virtually everything else is 4.1 or 4.3 from memory.

Hope that helps :)

hmm that link dosent say anything regarding cv sizes (or i may of mis-read)

any body got any pics of the different sizes?

4wdnuts/i wonder if those part numbers are regarding the size difference just because in the early 90s they fitted a ring gear to the outter bell for the speed sensor to run on for the abs system

Yep, you can have mine... $12,000... comes with a MU :P

Other than that, no... I had to search high and low (pinion ) to find that one... it was a lucky score when I got it... and I had to have it shipped down from up north somewhere...

Keep an eye on trademe, as there was a guy wrecking a 2.4 prado on there a while back... palmy nth or thereabouts from memory...

He needs a 4.88... that one is waaaay too high geared. By the time you re-gear it you'll have spent too much on it I think... better option, use that diff but get a fully worked 454 big block with blower :P Just 1000 or so HP :P Then you don't need to worry about ratios at all :D

I thought he could reuse his current R&P (dont know if its compatible).

Still worth shouting about, be pissed if it was okay but didnt know (I know I would be). ;-)
