You would need to mount a new brake caliper to each of the front or rear wheels to keep it road legal. Even then it would be doubtfull.

Seeing as its a show pony, and not a trials truck, and you don't have a dedicated navi who knows how to use the brakes, you would want to mount the leavers between the seats so the driver can opperate them. You need strength to get a wheel to lock up, remember that you normally use your leg to opperate the brakes :D

spoke to a cert guy when I was building my 40, and he said that if you can lock them off so nobody can operate them, then you can get it certed, but you would want to talk to your own cert man first.

you shouldn't need the extra caliper unless the cert guy requests it.

and if you have discs on the back then it should be easy to operate them without too much pressure

DB is right though. stick them between your seats and don't let anyone touch them otherwise shite happens faster than you think.

imagine thrashing down the side of the river or something and someone pulls one without you knowing. it will turn to custard fairly quick, I've seen it happen.

if you still have drums on the back, them don't bother at all.

Damn. I still run drums in the back.
Oh well. Was just an idea,
I know another road legal truck that has fiddles. All he does is takes the fiddles levers off on road. And that makes it legal.

I put them on my ol girl with drums on, and they worked great, for an hour or so.

do the rear disc conversion and plumb up wheel brakes at the same time and do as you say and make the levers removable or something.

Best idea, as with any modification is to check witht the man who will certify it, before you even contemplate starting the work.

to be brutally honest, the only time I ever used them was in 2 separate off road events. they never really got used much in the bush, although if they work good, they are awesome as a handbrake for hill starts.

talk to guys who have them and work out if you really think its worth it or not.

I like to hear other peoples thoughts on this. It's valuable to me.
Fiddles might be to extreme for me at this stage. But there's nothing wrong with throwing it out there I guess.

Got the new and improved hydraulic fan mounted on the radiator back this morning. Thorpe Engineering did a mint job.
After that's installed the dual action fan/steering pump is to be mounted. Then it all has to be plumbed up. Should be done by the end of the week.
if this doesn't sort the cooling issue out I don't know what will.

Rick at 4X4 Accessories says they are one of the highest CFM fans on the market. The two 12 inch electric fans only moved 1800cfm. This 18 inch hydraulic powered one will move over 5000cfm. It's pretty simple why I went with hydraulic skid.

Nice looking set-up. Interested in hydraulics versus electricity for winches also so to see hydraulic fans is interesting. What flow rate do these fans need to operate and are they fixed flow rate or variable with engine revs? I guess they'd be the latter if you're plumbing them into a power steering pump. What about blade flex? Are the blades rigid? Am thinking about movement of blades into the radiator should you get them into a decent level of water? You know, 2500-4500rpm fan heading into a much more dense fluid like water got to have some sort of wobble unless they're rigid material? Can you turn the fan off for this sort of driving/river-crossing work?

The owner of 4X4 Accessories here in Chch, Rick is the man to talk to about the hydraulic powered fans and winches. He's a real friendly bloke. You can reach him on 03 365 1909. Tell him I suggested you talk to him.

While my stock LS1 steering pump is being taken off in place of the dual action pump he asked me if I wanted to keep it on the engine to maybe power a hydraulic powered winch. I told him at this stage I'm thinking of going with a PTO system maybe next year, But he did tell me there are advantages going with hydraulic vs PTO. Such as variable winching speeds. But talk to him windsock. All this stuff is pretty new to me so I'm only going with what he suggests.

I guess it looks like I'm not serious as the budget on this mod is going to cost more than I expected.
I'm definitely no legend as far as mods go. Most of the mods aren't my idea anyway.
But I know what I want at the end of this project and I'm lucky to have the help and the coin to get it done.

I'll be putting a switch on the fan so I can turn it off on those deep water moments. Even though the fan blades are very ridged. The whole system has been made for easy removal for cleaning.

Installing the pump is proving to be a bit of a mission. The pictures show it sitting pretty high. It'll be sitting lower than that once finished. There's a fair bit of plumbing to go in yet.

What did the pump come off originally? or has it been altered to have the two outputs? I'd imagine it'll be noisey if its shifting that much air, but looking good though.

When i was parked up at the lights you could always hear the two 12 inch fans kick in. If it's a little louder, louder is good.
It hasn't been altered for the two outlets. The pump and fan is factor off a V8 Lexus.

Just had the pump lowered 2 more inches. 0.5mm clearance between pump and rocker cover now. 8) The pumps pulley has had the offset changed by 8mm to make the 2 inch drop possible. So now that's sorted the original steering pump is being removed making room for the idler pulley. That's changing sides from the left to the right.
Hopefully the pump will be getting plumbed in tomorrow then it'll be alive again. Fingers crossed.

Sure will nib.
Found out today that the hydraulic pump on the fan side has two speeds. A fast and a slow. GREAT!! Means it won't be sounding like a prop powered aircraft taking off all the time. :D We also found out that the auto belt tensioner couldn't be swapped to the right side as there is a tight side and a loose side to any fan belt system. So a fixed belt tensioner was made up. It looks factor.
Thorpe Engineering finished their work on it today.
I was a bit upset hearing that the new fan belt had to come off a Ford though. I'll have to change that. No way is this truck having a Ford part on it.

So it's at Ricks now getting the finishing bits done.

Who's had a 40 and put disc brakes on the rear?
I'm sick if getting crap in the drums. I'm looking at putting disc brakes on. The simpler the better.

Cheers for any help.

Just the adjustable shocks to plumb up to the on board air tank. Then will do away with the small compressor on the fire wall in behind the dash used to adjust them.

It's getting there slowly.

Then it's rear disc brake time.

Took it through 4 or 5km of soft sand yesterday to see how the new cooling system worked. Radiator handled it well. Though the hydraulic fluid over heated big time. So now it's getting a cooler fitted. In one of the pictures above you'll notice the high pressure line to the power steering is very close to the header pipe. Not sure if that will be helping it heat up. But it's getting moved further away from it that's for sure. Also a couple of hydraulic lines are kinked or turning to tight reducing the flow. That's also going to get fixed.

Feels like the heating issues are never ending.

Sorted a couple of problems out on the 40 this week.
Took the thermostat off the radiator line. Now it won't over heat at idle. Something still not right there. me thinks it's the water pump. But it's a quick fix for now.
Second thing was had a auto trans cooler fitted to the hydraulic line. That's sorted the hydraulics over heating. So now she's all good for the weekend. :D
