Fitting a small top mount intercooler to a 2L-T

Hi there,

It has been suggested to me that it would be beneficial to add a small top mount intercooler (no room for a front mount) to a 2L-T (then add bonnet scoop to aid air flow). Similar sized intercooler to that installed in Pajero diesel's etc.

The only other performance mod to my Surf will be a 2.5" exhaust to get heat away from the head, thats happening in 2wks...

Anybody done this? Will the 2L-T respond well to it?

Any help very much appreciated.

If you have boost nearing 10lbs any intercooler is beneficial for on road use as you gain more power and reduce the internal heat of the motor. It won't help off road unless you have a fan or water cooling.

I have a Prado one on the hilux and it reduces the pyrometer temperature around 50 celius on the road.

So, just by utilising an intercooler, power will go up, without an increase in boost? (Pardon my ignorance, Im new to turbo's...)

Im installing a boost gauge tomorrow morning to check, but I believe Im running around 6-7psi.

I've read your complete build, but I cant remember where you mounted yours. Did you front mount it?

don't expect a power increase, however it will help with reliability. the turbo's on those are fairly crappy and beat the shit out of the air. they get real hot when you wind the boost up. you may get some more power due to efficiencies but fuel is the key to power.

if you have a body lift it will help with fitting the intercooler in, otherwise its a bit of a tight fit. if at all possible fit a fan on the intercooler.

the other option (read terrys post on Toyota surf forum) is to use water injection. saves doing body lifts, cutting bonnets etc. also adding a bit of meths into the water will increase the power.

FItting a water/Air intercooler can be more use than a air/air intercooler, you get better cooling at low vehicle speed's, and can cool the intake temp below that of the out side air. I've got one off a subaru that's going onto my truck when the turbo's fitted.

You can pass that water through the radiator/heat exchanger for as long as you want and it will NEVER get colder than ambient unless there is something else there pulling heat out (like ice)
