Fj40 V8 broken engine mounts.

Post by ONOescudo »

Hi all.
Got a mate with a Chevy 305 V8 in a Toyota fj40.
This is the second time the front engine mount has broken, also this time the gearbox mount has broken.
It has an aluminum cast bracket with “Graham Berry” on it. Which is the front left and right engine mounts. Bolted across the front of the engine.
Then off the bell housing is separate left and right mounts as well. Obviously a Graham Berry adapter. Smashed the clutch slave cylinder mount as well.
Had a good look on the net and could only find the standard (original) type mid engine mount you would expect to use on such a conversion.
What’s the guts on this set up, is he doomed or has he got other issues?
Cheers.

The alloy mounts that came from graham berry are known to break.
A mates one broke back in the ninetys.
Best to replace with steel mounts.

Hi there

When I first got my 40 going with a 350 in it, I had problems with engine mounts breaking like yourself.

I had the factory toyota mounts mated to the chevy block and the next mounts were also off the bellhousing like yours.

the first time they broke, I just went to toyota and got replacement mounts, but after they broke a second time, it was decided to source a later model 40 series gearbox that has the mounts off the bottom of the gearbox, not the bellhousing.

when we sat back and looked at the old set up, we decided there was quite a bit of stuff to hang off the rear mounts.

also, with a later model box I think you get a stronger transfer case as well.

anyway, thats how I cured the problem and the engine mounts never broke again.

make a big strong gearbox mount, reinforce the bell housing mounts and make a steel front mount. and tell your mate to stop dropping the clutch ! thats the best way to break stuff.

If its the alloy Graeme Berry bracket thats breaking and not the rubber mount blocks it would be easier to throw the bracket away and use the origional chev engine mounts and get some new mounts fabricated up and welded to the chassis. The brackets on the Graeme Berry bell housing should be the origional cast cruiser L brackets?

The early cruisers had 4 engine mounts, 2 at the front and 2 on the bell housing and the gearbox/transfer case hung in space off the bell housing, the later cruisers (post 1980) had 2 engine mounts at the front and a gearbox cross member with a gearbox mount.

we had the berry bracket, it broke and took the side of the block with it and stuffed a good engine block, remake mounts to fit between chev block and chassis, off the side of the block, as for g box go for a lowr mouint that holds the bottom of the box.

Thanks for that guys.
Going to build some mounts from 16mm and 12mm plate steel. Seems to be the easiest way to get him going.
Again thanks.
O yes it’s a 307 not 305 but I got the rest right.
