Route 76 North Island book Sutherlands track

Post by mike »

Just rung up doc asking about access to this track. He said no access allowed, there has never been access. I then mentioned it was in the 4wd book and it was pointed out that doc does not indorse such books. It was also pointed out that I could mountain bike or take an ATV bike through. I thought I would persist with asking about 4wds and after a while was given a number of the featherston 4wd club who have an agreement to maintain the road and if arranged could take a trip through.

Anyone know any info about this track? is it worth pushing to get access?

keep em crossed cos mike said he dosent really want to be responsible if any thing went wrong,as he said he dosent really want too risk loosing a contract with the local council....which is fair enough

but,but hes going to ring the council today and say some of his workers from his log gang want to do a bit of 4wding on there lunch breaks or something ......which he seems to think might be positive cos the council know that if anyones experienced in recovery its the loggers so they wont be worried about people reported missing etc......

so my bud mikes trying his best guys and we will find out this afternoon whats goin on

I bounced the original subject of this post off Andy Cockroft who wrote the book in question and this is his reply...... his email is president@nzfwda.org.nz.........

I presume they are referring to Sutherlands Track

If that is the case, then access is only through ARAC, and to approved trip leaders

ARAC Wairarapa is headed up by Rod Lonsdale

get them to email me off-forum and I'll give contact details

Cheers

Andy
