I've lost 4wd, And alternator

Post by 86-surf »

Well last weekend found some mud holes, and hills on the side of the road, decided to give it a go. So yup did it a few times then went to do it again. all i herd was clank! and that was the end of 4wd... was still in low box but only the rear wheels were spinning, The cv's apear to be fine so does the front drive shaft, the auto hubs seem to be in one piece to.

So im thinking that the diff is F@#@#@ or the transfer case.

any other possible things to check?.

last night the truck wouldn't start so we had to push start it, At 1st i thought it was just because the radio was on when the truck was off, So i disconnected the radio and amp, push started it drove a round a bit turned it off and went to turn it back on still no power in the battery, push started it again left it running and disconnected the battery, the truck turns off, so from what i've been told this is something to do with the alternator, correct?

Cheers.

When its in 4wd jump under with handbrake on and turn front drive shalf. If it turns and you know the hubs are in something in diff, if it doesnt something in transfer

Get off the computer, go out to wagon, place transfer case in 4wd low, put gearbox into 1st, drive forward 10ft to enagage front hubs, turn off, leave in gear, get underneath and see if you can turn the driveshaft by hand, if it does turn then it will be a gearbox problem, if not then jack-up front end and see if you can spin the wheels and if the drive shaft turns, also listen for noise as it maybe an axle

Good work on your spelling also dude

if your going to run big tyres you need a front locker only cost 500-600 and not only save you changing diffs all the time they also make a surf a hell of a lot better off road.
Never argue with an idiot, they drag you down to their level then beat you with experiance!

when you get a job and save lots of money and if you still have the POS, and you want to strengthen the front end, send me a PM, and I'll put you in touch with a guy in Taupo who can transplant a 8" diff head into your independent front and you should not have any issues afterwards as he did it to his with a lexus V8 powering it.

and as curly said, great spelling dude and trucks looking good.

this is interesting has it just chucked a altenator belt?? i know it sounds simple but that could explain both faults as the vacume pump connects the 4wd in the ifs (ln130). I blew a front diff in my 130 surf went with a big bang took 2 teeth off the ring gear could really feel it when driving in 4wd.

jases 4wd isnt vacume operated like the newer ones. the 2ltE altinator will fit however its internally regulated so wiring is quite different.

Jase, the contacts on your altinator come out the side, you can remove them while its still in the truck. 9 times outta 10 they are just full of mud and need a quick cleen. and ya 4wd. your running 35's on ifs, what did you expect to happen.

Well alternator is fixed, garage guy didn't say what was wrong with it.

And it is not the diff that is stuffed.. I'm pritty sure that it is just the right auto hub, i put the rear on jack stands and put the jack under the front got it so wheels just off the ground put it in 4wd, and let the clutch out and had a wee it of an inspection.

Front left cv wasn't spinning, front right was, so I'm hopping that its just the auto hub that let go.

Does any one have some manual ones they don't want any more?

cheers
