diesel dial gauge help

ive just bought myself a dial gauge which didnt come with instructions, just wondering whats the smaller gauge for has numbers from 0-7 and moves one figure as the big dial goes right around which is numbers 0-90 i think, basically need instructions coz i tried working it out myself but i have no idea keep getting different readings, must be doing something wrong?

the smaller dial gives the counts of the large dial revolutions, the main dial should have 100 divisions, each division is 0.01mm, so for 1 rev of the large dial gives you 1mm of travel, 7 revolutions of the small dial gives you 7mm of travel.

if you get 35 divisions on the large dial that is 0.35mm

oh right so when i did mine i put it on 4 divisions put the crank at 30 degrees BTDC all timing marks aligned had the dial at 0 moved the crank too 9 degrees ATDC and the dial stayed on 0 which is what i want (according to manual specs) i think as the standard value is 1=0.03mm in doing this i'm sure the divisions didn't change at the time wasn't sure what i was doing but i know the big dial stayed on 0 so will it mater what division i was on ?

also the dial is driven on a small shaft isn't it ? which then pushes against the dial

put the dial onto the motor, adjust the position of the entire unit so the the needle rotates a couple of times at least, then turn engine over, if the item you are measuring is moving you will see the needle move, turn engine until the needle is at its lowest reading, you can either rotate the face of the dial gaugeto set zero, or note where you are, and read it at the approiate time,
if when turning the motor the needle does not move, chances are the needle tip or stylus is not contacting the item you are trying to measure,

cool by the unit you mean the dial not the pump correct ? i didnt realize you could have the engine going when the dial is hooked up

just tried what you said and it wouldnt start and diesel was pissing out where the gauge taps into the injector pump? does anyone have any instructions they can send me ? sorry pedro thanks for the help i'm sure your giving me correct info its prolly just me!

funny that, when i say turn engine over i did mean by hand, you haveto make sure the the tip of the dial gauge is touching what you are trying to measure, no contact no measure, to ensure you have contact turn the motor by and to see the needle move on the dial gauge.

yup i think i got it sussed, ahh the joys of learning thanks for the help, i got it down to like 0.01mm advanced !
