Crappy vid, but the best i got at the moment:
http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v492/ ... guts-1.flv
Its been sitting up on the hoist for the last week waiting for the gearbox to come back from Marshall Transmissons. Its getting a rebuild and a shift kit
Also took the opportunity to tidy up the transfercase oil leaks and track down a high volume baffled and gated sump, extended oil pick up and high volume oil pump. Still trying to find a Felpro 1 piece sump gasket so i can fit it all
Should be up and running again by next weekend

Re: A Classic is Reborn
Well, i have been busy getting aquainted with the truck, i've been to a couple of events and done a few easy bush trips and a few hours playing around at home putting it into all sorts of dum places and getting myself into all sorts of trouble
A few things that were in need of attention/improvement came up.
First up was the gearbox. Its a THM400, and it wouldn't pick up third and was a quite slow into reverse. No problem, there's heaps on trademe .
I brought a good one, but no one told me there are 12 variations in tail shafts on these tranny's, and it turned mine had a very rare 27 splibe 15" long shaft
I ended up re-selling that trans and got mine rebuilt, and got a re-program kit installed that converted it to a full manual shift. Marshal Transmissions in Hamilton turned it round in a week and did anawesome job, they even rebuilt the adaptor for me. Very Kool
So thats all in and running well (apart from the idiot at Repco that sold me heater hose instead of transmission cooler hose, and its all gone squishy and soft
)
Turns out the transfercase is from a G60 patrol, not a Dana 18 as i originally thought BTW
The next on the list was the to get the engine breathing better. Now its starting to run in, its making good power, but not as much as it could/should.
There's a slight compression issue on one cyclinder, but i'm not loosing sleep over that at this stage.
What is bugging me is that at about 3500rpm its all on and thats as good as it gets, it will rev to 5000rpm, but it just makes a cool noise, but no more power. I have spent a bit of time playin with the LPG set up, but didn't get far. Basically,
NOT ENOUGH FUEL AND AIR
This is the problem:

Its the little tiny 2 barrel Throttle Body and LPG mixer thats letting the side down:

So i got this to sort it out once and for all:

I didn't think to take pic's when it was in piece's while i was cleaning it up (cheer's Wopass for the Bling blast on the manifold), but its a Impco 300A Mixer on a 4 Barrel Throttle Body, onto a Edelbrock Performer dual plain intake manifold.

That should make it pull some numbers on the Tacho
Worst part of it is that my nice shiny freshly painted bonnet is gonna have to be cut and chopped to take a monster bonnet scoop to fit it all underneath

Measure it up and see if this fits, 86-Surf backed out of the auction I ran a couple of months ago and I havent got round to relisting it. Might be what you need.

Dang. Its been that long that the photos off my listing have gone, they were better than that one off tardeme.
Anywho, its 900mm long, 400(i think wide) and 90mm tall.
Have a think, they look fantastic on pretty much anything.
Re: A Classic is Reborn
I think I have a full service manual for that model patrol on cd somewhere, if ya want a copy flick me a pm
'85 Hilux crawler, 3rz, duals, 4.7's, 4.88's, ARB's, 30 spline Longfields, 6 stud SNR4x4 Histeer, Airshocks up front, coiled rear, 40" Iroks.

You need a bigger scoop than that to fit over a blower Matt

Re: A Classic is Reborn
I had one of those reverse mounted scoop thingys on orange.
funny thing was, before I put it on, it was fine, but after I put it on, I had an overheating problem, but only on the open road.
In the bush it was fine but open road it got hot.
found out after I sold it, that a mate had the same issue and did some open road wind tunnel type of testing to determine tht the hot air escapes and the hits the windscreen and tries to go back where it came from, thus stopping any hot air coming out of engine bay and therefore causing it to overheat.

I've had heating issues ever since I had the 5.7 put into my truck n all but not on the open road.
In my layman way of thinking I would of thought if you put a lot of venting at the top of the engine bay this would create most of the air to travel up. When it's natural path is to flow past the headers and down under the truck and out? Please excuse my backward way of thinking.

A few years ago I ran an A9X scoop on the bonnet of my HQ. had to fit it to give clearance for the LPG. I also made a template and put flutes into the guards this dropped my engine temop by 10 degrees. What I did tho was that as these scoops are quite long I cut approx 4 inches off the back and move the scoop back that far from the front of the bonnet, looked far better. Of course the HQ screen was a little more aerodynamic that a crusier so that helped the air go over the top. We also put an A9X scoop onto a statesman and again never had heating issues with that and it was running a full Brock spec motor
Re: A Classic is Reborn
Interesting on the heating dynamic's there Skid. Could well work that way round if your using the scoop purely for engine bay ventilation.
The bonnent on the Guts is quite well designed, the center flat part of it is raised off the fire wall about 20mm, giving heaps of ventilation.
Under the scoop is just a round hole with the air cleaner sticking through it, its a snug fit so the engine is drawing the cooler outside air, which in theory prevents it from mixing with the hot air trying to escape through the scoop as it would if there was a big open square hole under there.
Catch is, to fit the A9X scoop, i'm probably gonna have to cut the out the old scoop, which will leave a square hole under the new scoop.
Ahwell, i'm not there yet with it, gotta swap the manifolds round, and i had a dilema with it the other night:
Thermostate housing removal, sheared off a bolt:

Got it out in the end:

A couple of other bits that have gone into it. Finally found a use for my ToughDog front GQ Patrol shocks that have been sitting in the shed for a couple of years. Perfect fit for the Guts, waaaay to short for a lifted Patrol

Plasma cable and a Hawse fairlead for my crappy Runva winch thats still not working properly:

A quick Vid showing what i'm on about with teh restrictive intake manifold and Mixer. This a giving it everything its got:

Sounds like i'm taking it easy doesn't it

it first had standard bonnet and no inner guards, then purely for wank factor I decided to add the scoop to the fibreglass front end and put inner guards back in for the mud and it meant that the scoop was the only outlet for airflow.
I never thought of it as stopping the air flow, but the guy that had the same problem is a very clever chap and his word is never a lie. He put angled pieces in the hood scoop to direct air out the sides slightly and he also added some vents down the bottom in front of the factory toyota vent flaps on the footwell kick panels. It did the trick and cooled it down from then on.
It never bothered me too much as it was trailered, but if it was a roadie then I'd be concerned.
just more useful info for anyone thinking of a scoop on a flat screened vehicle.

Re: A Classic is Reborn

So far we have learnt that you can get a new fiber glass scoop for about $75 from the right person, and that you gotta be carefull putting a scoop for ventilation purposes on a truck with a flat windscreen as it can do some weird shit
