Hi guys,
I just bought a 1989 single cab navara 4x4. Im looking at pulling out the two single seats + centre console, and putting a benchseat in from an old falcon or something. Just in case I wanna sqeeze the mrs and boy (carseat!) in there to go down the beach..
Two things im not sure of..
1 - I need the hand brake to be moved, how hard will that be? Ill have another look tomorrow and see if I can just move it forward and sit it on the floor/tunnel, or possibly change it to the "pull" type handbrake by the steering column.. Or any other ideas!
2 - Fitting a seatbelt for the centre seat, has anyone done that before? Will it have to be certified afterwards?
Any input appreciated!

I would try hard to move it forward or put it on the out side of the drivers seat like the old cars used to.
From what a few people on here have said the pull style is not nearly as effective.

There is no mechanical problem so difficult that it cannot be solved by brute strength and ignorance.
Re: Fitting a benchseat - Navara Single Cab
Yeah ill have a look at the mounting points on different beanch seats at the wreckers, whichever one is closest to what Iv got now will be the one ill use lol..
As for the handbrake, my tape measure reckons itll be able to be moved forward closer to the gear stick, but im not sure if there will be any complications getting a wof, surely not?
Ill make a few phone calls about the seatbelt tomorrow.
Cheers!

Re: Fitting a benchseat - Navara Single Cab
if i were you i would get a benchy from another navara....makes bolting them in nice and easy.....modified seats have to be certed (aka falcon) also,if using a navara benchy you can then also use the factory navara seatbelts.not sure how its set up,but my guess would be the centre belt bolts through where your belt stalks are currently..
as for the handbrake i have a spare dash pull type if you want it,came from a 2wd so not entirely sure if its a bolt over job or not.
relocating the current handbrake forward could work, just make sure its bolted down well and doesnt look tacky(keep mr WOF happy)
you may run into a few issues with moving your handbrake forward.where its bolted in now is directly to the floor.....going forward and you get close to the very big hole (which is mostly covered by a shaped cap) in the floor where the gear stick comes through....i suggest you lift vinyl and have a look at how big it is and work out how far forward you need to come.
my 10c...sorry its abit long.

Re: Fitting a benchseat - Navara Single Cab
Thanks for the reply mate, long is good!
You guys were right, and I have bought a navara bench seat with a center seat belt. If the seat belt does comfortably use the same points as the current belts ill be thrilled! Will save a big headache.
As for the handbrake, I might have to look at going for the 'pull' type if need be, but ill do some more browsing and pull the vinyl up like you said. But even then I might get a second opinion..
Thanks guys!

Re: Fitting a benchseat - Navara Single Cab
Ok, this is gonna be tricky to describe, BUT:
The dash in a 1989 Navara is the same as the dash in the Terrano of the same year.
I had a Terrano, and one day i was poking around on the drivers side of the center console. From memory, towards the base of the dash, next to the center console was some kinda box type thing, i can't quite remember what it was for, maybe electric mirrors or something.
Anyways, i was doing something, and removed that box off the dash, as it was just screwed on, and behind that box type thingee was the mounting point and recess for the ute type hand brake. I presumed that as the same dash was used betwen the Terrano and the Navara, and Navara's generally had bench seats, that was why there was that facility for the hand brake there.
I have had a look through my pic's but can't find one of the dash to show you what i was talkin about. Could you or someone else take a photo of yours and i'll point it out.
