The Prado transfer case is the same as a landcruiser one( and you will need more than lexus hp to destroy one of them :P )
It probally depends weather you end goal is to have a manualised auto or a full auto?
If you want to go manual the Kzj71/78 would probally be the easist option - chuck it in unmodified and wire it up to a couple of relays for the manual shift.

Just as a side note: my truck can do either manual or auto- and i would say that it would be in manual mode 99% of the time(Heaps more fun  )

I'm with you there Madaz! I've always hated autos on the whole. too lazy in response to up and down shifts when in full auto mode. In a road car I use the stick to put it in the gear i want unless I'm sat in traffic. Mine would be used as a manual shift pretty much all of the time.
I reckon I'll get the Prado unit and see how long it lasts.
How do you actually control to manual shifting on yours? Another tiptronic type lever or a ratchet type?

As someone has already posted..you use relays attached to the solenoids in the order of prefference and then just use the stick..I'm thinking of doing this eventually as well..there are a few ways also of doing it..but they get more complicated..cheers

I just use a standard toyota auto shifter , where 1,2,3, do those gears and the overdrive button is 4th.
The shifter controls the relays, and the relays control the auto.
I dont know exactly what you planned usage for your vechicle is but, why dont you run a manual 5 speed set up?
You can pretty much do it from bolt togeather parts now days-
Buy a bellhousing, clutch and flywheel and a 5speed box out of a lj 71, kzj 71 (BUT MAKE SURE ITS THE TURBO DIESEL BOX)
and your there.

The 5spd manual option will be harsh on the CVs and diffs. The truck is used as a go-hard club truck and for the odd club rally champs. I've already broken CVs and front diffs (front&rear factory lockers with 35" Silverstones!) which makes me steer towards the auto box for the softer approach.
Also, by the time you've added up the price of adaptors, flywheels, clutches, etc the bill soon gets up there. The G4 Extreme link ECU has cost me an arm and a leg so I need to keep the price down in other areas of the motor swap if possible.

thats a good idea with using the standard Toy auto lever. I hadn't thought of the OD button...

I just looked up the serial no on the Lexus Auto I got with the VVTi and its a 35-50LS which comes up as a 5spd Auto after all.
This could put a stop to me combining the internals of the Lexus with an A343F Prado auto. Has anybody out there looked at a 5spd auto yet and knows what is interchangeable?

They are quite different apparently. It will also prevent you from using the auto bellhousing and adding an adaptor plate to go manual as I am pretty sure the bellhousing is different.

The block end of the housing will be the same but I am sure that the auto end of the housing is different. Are there any markings on the bellhousing? The only ones known to work are marked U1 and U2. These are available on trademe though usually for about $50.

It has U1 on the bell housing and from the exterior is exactly the same as a 94 Surf V6 auto. The Surf auto is sat in a yard still bolted up to the engine so can't check the internal bolt pattern to the trans housing.
Does anybody have a photo of the bellhousing/input shaft of a A343F that can be posted here so I can compare?

If you look on the lextreme web site under 4wd conversions theres some links that show how to convert the gear boxes over - which may or may not work for you , but worth a look....

Bit of an update...

The Lexus VVti 1UZ lives!

I finally got it wired up to the Link G4 ECU and fired up on the pallet today. No problems at all and sounds very sweet...

The non-return fuel supply system will take a bit of careful fuel pump selection and plumbing in the truck but otherwise all good.

The A343F Prado auto I bought was directly interchangeable with the 5spd Lexus auto parts so the input shaft, oil pump and bellhousing swapped over a piece of cake. Its now all wired for manual shifting using the standard lever to select gears. Torque converter is also wired for manual switching in case its needed for steep descents.

Hopefully doing the engine swap in mid Jan so watch this space.
