take photos of it as you pull it down and build it up again. Along with a commentary, this thread would be a valuable resource in the tech section.

il take some more photos when i can workout how to get it apart :P was trying to get it off tonight but wouldnt budge then looked down the drum and there is a clip of some sort that is stopping it from moving. to get it out do i have to hit the long end of the hammer down this end?
Image
and if so do i need to try and get the clip that is on there off.?

If you trying to hit it down the drum from how your holding it in the picture, you are hitting it the wrong way

Your hammer is too small

I know, I know - it's no help but it's too hard to resist!

Pour a shit load of wd-40 down there when you leave it overnight to help break down the old grease

well got the brake out thanks to a m8. took him a few hours though as it was soo stuck. cleaned all the bits and pieces up and put them all in order as this may help other people distinguish the parts on the drawing to the real thing.
first is the motor assembly.
Image

then its the break assembly all in bits but NOT IN ORDER as it all fell apart when it came out and most of the brake assembly is stuffed so its time for a new one.
Image

now is the gears which i will finish cleaning up tomorrow as there was a ton of water in with the grease which is usually not a good sign. so il re greese tomorrow too.
Image

and if anyone wants the parts breakdown it is on the warn website :http://www.warn.com/truck/ReplacementParts/parts/8/srrpl113-114.pdf

A very worthwhile mod is to put a drain in the planetary gear end of winch if you are going to be in water. The water comes in through the ends of the drum and it cant get out so the winch is half full of water all the time.

This in turn is what makes the brake rust.

I haven't got any pictures of my old 9000 ti but what I did was grind a channel up the side of the planetary housing going right through the big planetary gear to take a 7mm piece of plastic to work as a drain. On the end of that you can fit some heat shrink and squeeze the end so water can come out but shit doesn't go the other way.

Works a treat.
I now have the latest 9500 Ti and they have seals on both ends of the drum to solve that problem.

Cheers Richard

sounds like the sorta thing id do to stuff the winch up lol but i dont think i will be in too much water just lots of mud and hill driving but every now and then i would pull the winch apart for a look. i have a chip well a big one in the houseing pictured below is there any way to fill this up so water doesnt get in as much. i tryed welding but the mig wire wont stick.

it is probably aliminium, either get it tigged up at a local engineers or use some "kneadit" very good epoxy repair putty, just clean the surface so it is clean but rough, and mold to shape

well a little update, i finally got my winch brake assembly after waiting for a long time for the part to come into the country. pics here:
Image
it is not the same brake as the one that came out but it works ok. here is it inside the drum.
Image

the only problem i have atm is that the motor will only go one way and when it turns the drum there is a horrid crunching noise in the gears but only when the clutch is engaged. does anyone know what this could be?

cheers

martin
