Hilux Tyre OEM Info

Post by curious_george »

I was hoping for a little help please.

Where would I find some information about the original tyre size for a 1992 Hilux 4x4 Double Cab? Or, better still, some info on the largest tyres I would be able to fit without getting a cert? It's a jap import.

I have been given a set of 245/75R16's that I've fitted on, and seem good. They replaced a set of 235/75R15's that were on it when I brought it, but I have no idea if they are original or not. The spare that was on there just has 215 R15 on it but again, I don't know if it's original.

Using a GPS, the speedo actually seems to be a lot more accurate with the new tyres than with the 15's I took off so I would think that would be better than the old tyres.

I had a look on the LTNZ website but couldn't find anything, so rang them today - with no luck. I was flat-out told that they don't keep a register of tyre sizes - which kinda makes me wonder how they can enforce the whole 5% thing if they don't actually know what is was originally! How do they do it?

Any info would be greatly appreciated please.

Just a NA 2.8L diesel.

I'd prefer to be able to drive it on the road also so a great big set of feet would make trips take forever!

fairly sure that 215R15 would be factory size

open the drivers door and look down the bottom of the B pillar below the door latch somewhere and there should be a sticker with the factory tyre size and recommended tyre pressures.

Hmmm I wish it was that easy! It appears that sticker is long gone...I think my best bet would be to find a truck the same and see if that has got it's sticker perhaps?

99% sure that 215 R15 is factory

235/75R15 is roughly the same rolling diameter

lots of folks go to 33s without too much hassle

for more tyre tech info, you can go here.........................

I work in a tyre shop and use that site on a regular basis (very handy)

Ah ok. With that in mind, and throwing it into this other site I found which is pretty good:

http://www.exploroz.com/Vehicle/Tyres/SizeCalc.aspx

I get two different rolling diameters with a percentage difference of 5.51% - not cool really :( I guess that means I need a cert if I want to keep them on there on the road?
