Just been having a discussion and was wondering, do Petrol or Diesel engine Surfs have the longer life expectancy?
I always thought diesel engines were longer lasting on average.
Which lasts longer Diesel or Petrol Surfs?
Re: Which lasts longer Diesel or Petrol Surfs?
depends on what model surf you're talking about.
2.4 diesel = boom

Re: Which lasts longer Diesel or Petrol Surfs?
Yeah, I know of the problems with the 2.4 TD engines and cracking heads.
Was thinking more of the newer engines in the second and third generations. Such as the 3.0 L V6 and the 3.0 L turbodiesel.

I had a 1987 2.4 diesel years ago.. was great.. no problems.. i heard it was the 1989 onwards 2.4s that had problems..
Re: Which lasts longer Diesel or Petrol Surfs?
my v6 petrol had 280000 genuine ks on it and didnt use a drop of oil. my mate has one that has got about 320000 on the clock and is going strong.
Re: Which lasts longer Diesel or Petrol Surfs?
don't think it makes that much difference engines these days. provided both are looked after they will do 400,000+ without a problem.
however surfs, 2.4 crack head, 3 litre diesel crack heads and turbos + overheating probs, v6 petrol have had head problems too. biggest factor in reliability is the drivers. see plenty of 2.4 surf drivers with lead feet and they wonder why they the motors shit themselves.

I have the Petrol 4y and it has done 300,000+km and is still going I have tried and cant kill it, there is piston slap timing all ofer the place it tows stuff short distances and does a lot of short running with the occasional longer trip.
As with anything you look after it and it will go well, the Diesel has not done as many KM 2.8 240,000km and both are NZ New.
Where the Hilux's fall down I believe is their temperature guage, the factory temp guage is knobbled to have a large dead zone, the needle moves to the centre and stays there until you are in trouble!
There is a thread somewhere on here that go's through the fix, this has caught me once. The rad top tank let go as I was going uphill and the engine started pinking, looked around and nothing wrong so I carried on at 100k, the old 4y started to slow more and I looked again, the needle had gone from the middle to max so I slowed and then got the rad steam on the window.
I filled the rad and tried drive it but just lost the water ASAP (tried 3 or 4 times to kill it that way)
Still did not kill the 4y, a head gasked the rad flushed and new top tank and a set of rings later and away it went
still just as fast
but at the time money was an issue otherwise the V6 Commodore would have been fitted.

Found that thread on the australian surf owners site. Looks like you can fix that factory 'dead zone' thing for about a dollar. You really don't want a gauge that tells you when its cooked. You need it to read right so you don't cook it!!!

http://www.toyotasurf.asn.au "factory temp gauge can be fixed for 60cents
Was an interesting read
