umm ok... lets make it sunday then, and i've never been to waiarapa?? whats wrong with my spelling, its how cool kids spell :) i cant afford to break anything either hah, as no way i could afford to repair much more than a dif. at the moment. If we went to waiarapa, any requirements on truck levels?? like speicific gear requirements? as i may bring a guy who i sold all my old gear to whos truck is abit.... lol hes got my old mud tyres though hah, also if we went there, would you lead the way since you know it?

Whats this voting crap.....anyone would think we live in a democracy.....Yeah Right.

But seriously dont know my way around the Waipara....was thinking maybe go from the Waipara turnoff down stream to the bridge behind Amberly. About half way stop for a picnic lunch & maybe have a look for some fossils in the cliffs.

Just remember you will all be watched like hawks in there by those opposed to 4x4 access to the river, so dont go doing anything silly, stick to the river bed and keep off the grassed area at the horse shoe bend about 1/2 way down from SHW1 bridge to the next one. This area is private land and is constantly ripped up by idiots. Have a fun and safe trip.

BTW, if you go down to the mouth, be careful where you drive there too, there are signs up explaining the do's and donts there too.

just the whole sign?? drive in small groups? drive slowly? i know when i go 4x4 i drive slowly, but, i dont know it's just funny for some reason? seems abit PC or something, like a child came up with the sign in school? and where else would you find a sign in a recreational area telling you the do's and dont's haha, and if you dont follow the dont's they PUNISH YOUUUU severly!!! but not with a wooden spoon or hand, by verbally telling you HAHHHaAAA, and mention they will...?? shush your making me think to much, im ment to be relaxing not stressing over a stupid road sign

Steady on there pal!, I was one of the volunteers who helped erect that particular sign.
It has come to this as there is/was a great number of 4x4 users who have caused many problems/issues in this very river in the past. Its one hell of a political area, so much so that many clubs wont go there anymore.
You don't have to like what it says, but I urge you to respect the message or we all will loose the use of this riverbed.

Not now sorry, all I was trying to do was point out how fragile this area is.

im with pete on this to,its all well and good having a capible truck but if people like you laugh at signs like this then you are the stupid one shooting yourself in the foot.
pete and co put in the effort to help settle things and keep the area accessable for 4wders,its simple

ABUSE IT AND LOSE IT

just have a think about things before saying things or keep it to yourself

Just for some "food for thought" I thought I would post in here a link to an old topic relating to some of the issues we have encountered on this area. Its a long read but well worth it just to see what we have come up against.

Dont get caught up in all the drama & hype.
This trip will be like all our other trips.....just a group of like minded people going out & seeing a bit of our beautiful country & behaving in the wellbehaved & respectful way we always do.

Im not going to let the irresponsible action of OTHERS stop me enjoying my right to enjoy the outdoors with my kids.Im not a young immature person & am also very well educated ....i know how to behave in public.

i have never been to waipara before, so i was thinking we could meet up in amberly, and if someone knows where to go, they can lead the way, otherwise itl be more of a meet up and explore... im keen to go to waipara, just to see what its like... We could meet in amberly at around 10am on the side of the road, just as you get in, at the "T" intersection of the main road, and amberly beach road.... theres a nice parking thing on the side.... and yeah?? ill have my radio with me if needed

I am interested in coming but may not make this trip (i will see how repairs etc go) It is a great place to go, take a bbq if you get a chance, i thought i should mention this is a very casual trip, is is more about cruising through checking out the surroundings than about getting as far as possible. If your looking for hard yakka, mud holes or a true test of your vehicle and skills you will not find it and should not be trying. Good on you for going and i may join you but you need to be aware of the conditions of entry.

The local neighbours and farmers will watch this website and will not hesitate to report you to the police for any irresponsible actions or willful damage.

people have worked very hard to allow any vehicles to travel in and out of the area

it is advised that groups are kept to a small number to reduce damage

it is a great spot for fishing and swimming and it is expected that you will go out of your way to respect another persons right to also be in the area.

Please be aware of the signs and follow the rules and you will have a great day and many more over many more years, if you do not we will not be allowed back as it is very easy for a small group to spoil it for the rest.

Cheers, might see ya out there
Dave.

I went on a recce down the waipara about a month ago. The river bed has seriously changed since the flooding. I would expect the riverbed up to the gorge from stringers bridge to be very soft and with alot more exposed rocks to climb over. I entered at Stringers bridge, bonnet was strainght under the water. The river bed has been scoured out and is about three foot lower then what it used to be, and the course has changed in some parts. It is very soft down near the horseshoe and out at the mouth.
