Police have named a cyclist who was killed in a collision with a 4WD vehicle in Invercargill yesterday.
Noel Eade, 61, was cycling north on Lindisfarne Street about 5pm when he and a Daihatsu 4WD collided on Tay Street.
Mr Eade was taken by ambulance to Southland Hospital but died a short time later.
Police investigating the crash called for any witnesses to the accident to come forward.
Mr Eade was also involved in a cycling accident on September 8 last year, The Southland Times reported.
He was one of five cyclists hit by a truck which drove through the intersection of Grove Bush-Woodlands Rd and Rakahouka-Hedgehope Rd.
He was taken to Dunedin Hospital's intensive care unit after suffering badly cracked ribs which collapsed on to his lung.
Cycling Southland president Steve Canny said Mr Eade had loved cycling and had contributed greatly to the region's cycling.
"It's a huge blow to the cycling fraternity. . . We are very saddened by what's happened," he said.

Its sad that a cylist got killed by a vechilce but i feel its a bit on the nose to mention it was a 4WD- giving a blanket covering 4WD a bad image...

Write a letter to the newspaper and website questioning their motive for highlighting the fact that the vehicle was a 4WD. As a Daihatsu, it is hardly in the monster category. If we don't question things then they become the norm.

While it is a terrible thing to have happened, did you notice that last year he was hit by a truck and survived - this year he was hit by a 4wd and died later in hospital - we can only presume that if he was hit by a motorcycle he would have died instantly.

Goes to show that its not the size or type of vehicle that is to be blamed.

This is a tragic incident and the police will (rightly so) investigate, 4wd or not. I gave up riding a motorbike because people could not see it (was yellow, and the next one was red) every near miss was with the headlight on.

Part of the problem is people don't allow for the speed, judge the distance or don't see the bike! There is also in the I am in a cage effect where people feel too safe in cars now and do not concentrate.

Another tragedy that reminds us all to be aware of our surroundings, both on and offroad I hope if the driver was at fault the prossecution fines and loss of licence gets just as much of a write up.
