I have just got myself a 85 bj 70 and the rear drive shaft is rocking around alot.I have been told its the pinion bearing,it makes afunny noise when you take off but then its sweet. All so been told it could be the crush spacer....????? When the truck is stopped and get under it you can move it very easy . So if anyone can shine any light on my problem that would be great...thanks abbo

Sounds like the pinion bearing, I replaced mine in the Hilux earlier this year

Re: pinion
If you are doing serious 4 wheeling it pays to throw the crush spacer away and set the pinion up with a solid spacer and shims.
They are miles better

you just need the solid spacer under the gas pedal

The only advantage of a crush tube is that it is quicker to set the preload of the pinion up but is not as strong as a solid spacer that all the old trucks had.
The crush tubes in the real world are a real problem because a pinion flange under load only has to hit a boulder and the preload then is then stuffed and the diff self destructs .
The problem is so bad some of the mines on the west coast are converting all there trucks to solid spacers to save their diffs.

Re: pinion
A solid spacer is defintely the way to go, stops any chance of the pinion being shoved back by hitting something as Bulletproof said, but if you really want to save your Toyota's diffs, then crank the carrier bearing preload to 150ft/lbs, ie turn the carrier bearing adjuster nuts in another 1/4 to 1/3 of a turn more from stock settings, prevents gear deflection, ie broken teeth
