Re: Yet Another Brilliant Recovery Gone Tragically Wrong
WTF were they thinking? Are they dumasses or what? Who would let someone recover their vehicle like that? What were they trying to acheive anyway? Didnt they think pulling from the front or rear would be better, then the round rolly things might have helped? Instead they were going to miracle it sideways - They can stay the feck away from me when I am in trouble.
I have seen some dumb shit but that is the dumbest in a long time. Didnt one of the huge group think it might not be a good idea?
Unfecking believable. Owner deserves to walk home after letting another dumbass do that.

Considering the front and rear bumpers are under the goo, i reckon that might have been a good way to break the suction.
Have any of you ever been suck over the flloor pans in a soft gooey ooze??
The suction is phenominal, and you have to yank and rock the vehicle to break the suction until you can even consider extracting it.
One can only hope that they were hoping to break the suction and keep the recovery vehicle on the hard ground, not rip the bloody thing in half

Yeah I have to agree about the roll-cage connection to the chassis - might have been a good idea to have checked that first before pulling!
In their defense though, I've done two recoveries that required pulling the vehicle to it's side. Admittedly, one was of a quad sunk to it's seat in mud that we rolled to either side in order to get flax etc under the wheels and lift it up and out out (the other quad couldn't get enough traction in the swamp to do either a forward of rearward recovery before you ask).
The other job however involved a 15,000kg vehicle that was dragged sideways up and out of it's predicament by another wagon from just 150m away. Unfortunately there was no other way (despite a couple of attempts at a few other plans). I'll post a picture or two as soon as I find it. Suffice to say that there was no going forward or backwards from this position and the only thing really preventing the vehicle from making it's way tumbling to the bottom of the hill when we first turned up was a concrete culvert that was jammed under the second and third diff.
(Pictures to come, honest!)

Re: Yet Another Brilliant Recovery Gone Tragically Wrong
As Promised. Unfortunately I have no pictures of the task being conducted, nor is it video even though we're in the video post (hopefully pure interest will out-weigh that one) - but as both camera man and operator of the recovery vehicle, there usually isn't time to do both!
The wagon when we arrived at the task site. The other two vehicles with their winch ropes attached are more for piece of mind for the tankies - they set it up to "hold" the casualty. In reality, I think, due to the angles of the anchor vehicles, it would have either broken the ropes, or dragged the other wagons down the hill had the casualty rolled. Luckily there wasn't too much chance of that once it had come to rest.

As mentioned before, there is a concrete culvert under the wagon that it's resting on. It can't quite be seen, but you get the idea from this shot.

The following two were taken a few days later to show the location without the wagon in the way.
Looking down the hill towards where the casualty vehicle was, and beyond.

Looking up towards where the recovery vehicle was parked - well over the crest of the hill and out of sight of the task.

Using my wagon, we pulled from the top of the hill to the left of the casualty (quite a task to get to in itself!), intending to hold the casualty while it was winched rearward. Unfortunately, that didn't quite work as planned. Plan E or F by this stage hadn't worked, so we just gave it a thoroughly good pull and, lo and behold, she crept up the hill a little, just before maxing out the winch. The beauty about the Rotzler TR200 however, is that although it's rated line pull is 200kN, on initial winch in it pulls about 250kN before the cut-outs activate. So our casualty was crept, one small pull after another, slowly back to hard standing and the tankies drove it away.
As you can see - sometimes sideways is the only option!

This is the best I have unfortunately - you'll have to forgive the particular show it comes from! I work with the soldiers in the video - we have two types of people in the army - those who fix things, and those that f... them - these jokers aren't fixers

To become a driver is a five week course, covering basic maintenance, operation of the vehicle systems, off road and on road driving. Each driver does a minimum of 300km off road, and 200km on road before being assessed as competent.
Re: Yet Another Brilliant Recovery Gone Tragically Wrong
So where is the pic of the recovery wagon? Seen it in action (okay vids and pics) and the metal heads (guys who have an appreciation of steel and hydraulics) will love it.

Re: Yet Another Brilliant Recovery Gone Tragically Wrong
I'm guessing that was probably the old 816. A very impressive vehicle to work with, despite the fact one needed to dig out 3 cubic meters of earth in order to anchor the vehicle!
Search for 'M1089' in google and hit "I'm feeling lucky". It'll take you right to a page showing the current in-service medium recovery vehicle that we've had since 1996 which replaced the 816. All the technical data can be found there - suffice to say it's an awesome recovery truck.
